Knights rout Clyde-Savannah 41-6
Shaughnessy scores 3 TDs, passes for another in win over Eagles

Recap story by Michael Robinson - Batavia Daily News Sports

LeRoy - For the second week in a row, the LeRoy Oatkan Knights hosted a top football program. And just like last week, they made winning look easy. The Finger Lakes West Region sent the Clyde-Savannah Golden Eagles to try and tame the Knights, but a strong defensive performance by LeRoy (3-0) and TDs on its first 5 drives, had the Eagles leaving with a 41-6 loss.

Knights QB Joe Shaughnessy led the way with 98 yards on the ground and was 6-of-10 in the air for 69 yards and 2 TDs. Shaughnessy also returned an interception 101 yards for a score. Joe Caccamise and Joe Cosimeno carried the load at running back for LeRoy, with Caccamise piling up 71 yards and Cosimeno another 60. Cosimeno also threw a 25-yard TD pass to Brendan Fulmer on a halfback option. On defense, Cosimeno recorded 8 tackles. Andrew Fox added another 57 yards and a TD for LeRoy.

Clyde-Savannah (1-2) was limited to 61 yards on the ground, but QB Jake DerCola was able to manage 177 yards on 16-of-35 passing with a TD. LeRoy's Jason Hodge and Tim Dieffenbacher each had a game-high 8 tackles, while Hodge also added 2 sacks for the Knights.

"We're in very good shape (and) we keep the intensity up by talking to each other when a player makes a good play," Hodge said. "We have to get out and execute and work on the small things. Those are important to us."

The game started off bad right away for the Eagles. On their third play from scrimmage, Shaughnessy intercepted DerCola at midfield. Seven plays later, Shaughnessy took a keeper up the middle for 21 yards to the Eagles 2. He then scored on a QB sneak to give LeRoy an early 7-0 edge.

On Clyde's next possession, they were able to move into Knights territory but the drive stalled on a fourth and 3 play. Once again Shaughnessy would drive the Knights down the field, keyed by his own 55-yard run to the Clyde 11. After a Cosimeno run to the one and another Shaughnessy one-yard TD sneak, it was 14-0 LeRoy.

Clyde's next drive also resulted in an interception, this time by Cosimeno after DerCola was buried by LeRoy defensive lineman Donny Miller, who forced the errant pass. Just 3 plays later and 18 seconds later, Shaughnessy hooked up with Fulmer in the back of the end zone on a fade pattern for a 7-yard TD strike. Fulmer booted his third of 5 PATs on the night to make it 21-0 Knights. Brendan also had 5 touchbacks on kickoffs.

C-S would have to punt on the next drive and this time it only took LeRoy 2 plays to score. Cosimeno took a pitch from Shaughnessy and started to sweep right, but then pulled back and hit Fulmer down the field for a TD to put LeRoy up 28-0.

LeRoy once again got the ball back via a C-S punt and would drive again, this time for 74 yards on 5 plays. Andrew Fox capped off the drive with a one-yard TD run to make it 35-0.

The Golden Eagles finally scored on their next drive. After a roughing the punter penalty on LeRoy, the Eagles had new new life and they would capitalize with a 4-yard TD pass from DerCola to Tom Ferron. The TD was the first score the LeRoy defense has given up this season. The conversion would fail and LeRoy went into halftime with a 35-6 lead.

"We made a mistake with about two and a half minutes left to go and they made a couple of nice plays. They are very well coached," LeRoy coach Brian Moran said of the Eagles, who knocked Genesee Region League representative Elba out of the sectionals last season.

The second half was a defensive battle with neither team getting an offensive score. Shaughnessy did, however, get a defensive TD for LeRoy. With the Eagles driving, Shaughnessy picked off DerCola in the end zone and returned it 101 yards for the final score of the contest.

"Our intensity was really high in the second half because we were mad about the one touchdown, the first points we gave up this season," Shaughnessy said. "We can't take anything for granted because any team can beat any other team on any given day. We have to keep that in mind."
