Knights storm past HF-L Cougars 27-0
Offense awakens for 300 yards of rushing behind stellar line play

LeRoy - Hurricane Isabel lost its ravaging powers after it went over the mainland and the LeRoy-HF-L contest went on as scheduled at Hartwood Park Friday evening (9-19). The tropical storm may have weakened over land, but Brian Moran's Oatkan Knights were anything but weak on the ground against the visiting Class B Cougars. Featuring a newly beefed up offensive line, the host Knights ran for 300 yards against an overmatched Honeoye Falls-Lima defense. Returning to the starting offensive line were RT Ian Christiansen and TE Phil Niccloy. These two big boys along with linemates Ian Whitcroft, Casey Moran. Ryan Duthe, Tim Dieffenbacher, and Dan Panek provided the LR backfield many openings as 9 different Knights rushed the ball in the contest. The LeRoy defense was similarly stellar in their play, limiting the HF-L offense to 64 total yards. At night's end, the Oatkan Knights (ranked #10 in New York State - Class C) were 27-0 winners on their home turf.

The Knights kicked off to start the contest with Isabel's gusting breezes to their backs. The Cougars returned well and began their offensive start at their 43. The LeRoy defense held strong after some initial fine running by HF-L tailback Jason Gardner. The visitors went 3-and-out and the Knights took possession at their 21-yard line after an HF-L punt. LeRoy RB Andrew Fox set the early tone for LeRoy offense blasting up the gut for 9 yards on 1st down. Fox, whose stellar 43-yard run against Avon was the difference in last week's 9-7 victory over the rugged Braves, would once again be a key element in the Knights' punishing ground game. This first series had LeRoy pounding the Cougars with a variety of runs featuring 5 different rushers. Senior Jimmy Macaluso worked hard to receive some touches among all of the talent in the LeRoy backfield and made the most of his opportunities. Mac was outstanding in the opening drive as he ran with reckless abandon against the Cougar D. The Knights converted two 4th-and-1 scenarios and scored with but 17 seconds remaining in the 1st quarter. In all, the Knights went 79 yards on 21 plays before Fox plunged into the end zone from one yard out. The methodical punishing drive ate up an amazing 9:39 off the clock. LR kicker Ryan Duthe split the uprights with the PAT kick to give LeRoy a 7-0 lead.

The ensuing Knights kickoff found an unmanned area amongst the HF-L return team and the Cougars were stuck with tough field position at their own 22. Junior DL Jason Spencer stuffed the hopes of HF-L's second offensive series when he sacked Cougar QB Cade O'Brien on 3rd-and-7 from the 25. The Knights started at their 44 after the HF-L punt. The Knights once again received good push from the boys up front as holes were opened up nicely for a variety of fresh and hungry backs. LeRoy QB Brandon Klinkbeil (19 yds around left end), FB Steve Angora (punishing up the middle) and RB Mike Farabella (great running inside and out) were all instrumental in LeRoy marching the ball down the field for another score at the 8:41 mark of the 2nd quarter. Klinkbeil found paydirt from 4 yards out to cap the 7-play scoring effort. The PAT pass failed and the Knights had moved out to a 13-0 lead.

The Cougar offense took the field at their 38 with the mindset of cutting into the LeRoy lead and gaining momentum before intermission. The LeRoy defense, superbly coached by Andrew Paladino, would have none of that. Tim Dieffenbacher, Mike Pacer, and Dan Panek swarmed to the ball and the Cougars could gain just 3 total yards in the series. The Knights took over at their 27 after an HF-L punt and looked to add another tally before halftime to break their opposition's spirit. The Knights immediately bettered their field position on back-to-back runs by versatile senior Jake Whiting. Niccloy, Christiansen, Fox, and Angora opened huge holes for Jake to gain 19 yards on the successive runs. Jimmy Mac took it to the Cougar 38 with yet another physical run, this time for 10 yards. QB Klinkbeil took to the air on 3rd-and-8 from the HF-L 36 but overthrew his target which resulted in an HF-L interception. The visitors' start at midfield was fueled by some fine rushing by Jason Gardner and timely passing by QB Cade O'Brien. The Cougars moved the ball nicely to the LeRoy 28 before Klinkbeil intercepted an O'Brien pass tipped his way by LeRoy DB John Zinni. The Knights ran out the clock to maintain their 13-0 lead at the break.

The second half began positively for the Knights as returner Slade Fitch found some running room through the Cougars to give LeRoy a drive start at their own 42-yard line. Soph Mike Farabella, the game's leading rusher, ran well to fuel the drive. Fox got into the act as well pushing the ball to midfield with a 9-yard rushing effort. The LeRoyans were met with a 4th-and-1 at the HF-L 35. Offensive Coach Chris Cappotelli called down from the box to give the ball to Jimmy Macaluso. Big Mac delivered with a punishing 4-yard blast to the HF-L 31. Fox shot out of the backfield for a stellar 21-yard effort to the give the black helmeted hosts a 1st-and-goal at the HF-L 10-yard line. Three plays later Farabella crashed over from one yard out to complete the 10-play scoring drive and give LeRoy a 19-0 lead. The PAT kick sailed wide.

HF-L's first possession of the second half needed to be a score for the Cougars to have any chance of getting back into the contest. LeRoy linebackers Pacer and Dieffenbacher were up to the challenge, stuffing the HF-L offense. LeRoy DL Steve Angora blasted through the HF-L line to sack Cougar QB O'Brien and force yet another Cougar punt after the HF-L drive netted -9 yards. The Knights took over at their own 49 after the punt. Farabella continued to show speed and the exceptional ability to take a hit as he gained nice yardage for the Knights' offense. The drive eventually stalled at the Cougar 39. The 4th-and-9 punt by Jake Whiting angled beautifully deep into HF-L territory where the Cougar returner knocked it OB at his own 1-yard line. The LeRoy defense made the visitors pay for this miscue as Ryan Duthe and Steve Angora broke through the HF-L line along with teammate Pete Paliani to sack HF-L QB O'Brien in the end zone for a safety. With 1:59 remaining in the 3rd quarter, the Knights were in control leading 21-0.

HF-L's nightmare continued after the free kick from the Cougar 20. The Knights took possession and drove 48 yards in 11 plays for their final TD of the night. Farabella raced into the end zone on a 4th-and-4 from the 10-yard line with 8:23 remaining in the game. Mike's second TD gave the Knights a 27-0 lead (PAT kick was no good). Klinkbeil and Fox ran well during this final scoring drive that took 5:30 off the clock.

The Knights' ensuing kickoff was well covered as Ian "Gator" Christiansen absolutely leveled the HF-L returner at the Cougar 28. Gator has worked long and hard to rehab his injured knee and return to action. His 2003 debut after his fine junior season was just what the doctor ordered for the Oatkan Knights.

The LeRoy reserves maintained the shutout win with some fine performances turned in by a slew of talented players. Zac Condidorio repeatedly put pressure on the Cougar O from his defensive position and tackled extremely well. Rob Wortman muscled his way through the Cougars to pick up 11 yards on his 2 carries to spark the LR offense. Josh "Deion" Makovitch showed textbook defensive line play in his short stint. Beyond a doubt, Deion has worked hard to become the Knights' most improved gridiron warrior. Sophomore long snapper Aaron Scott not only gets the ball back to the punter with zip, he is routinely the first defender down the field to tackle the opposing team's punt returner. Check him out. Sophomore Tim Andrews also returned from injured status to play well and give notice of his future greatness.

Final score from Hartwood Park read LeRoy 27, Honeoye Falls-Lima 0. Next up, the Knights go on the road Friday to take on the tough Indians coached by LeRoy High alumnus Tim "Sticks" McMullen. The Indians gave Class B power Hornell all they could handle in their heart-breaking 7-0 loss to the Red Raiders this past week. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
