Knights subdue Letchworth Indians 35-6
Sophomore Mike Farabella runs for 142 yards against Indians defense

Gainesville - The Knights ventured to Gainesville, NY on Friday evening (9-26) to take on the host Indians of Letchworth High. The Indians were coming off a heartbreaking 7-0 loss to Class B power Hornell in a slugfest that was not decided until the last minutes of the contest. With the loss, the Indians gained the confidence that they could play with anyone in Section 5 Class C. The Knights, ranked in the Top 10 of New York State (#9 in Class C), looked to back up their lofty early season ranking with another physically dominating performance after the sound drubbing of the HF-L Cougars a week ago. Coach Moran's Knights were successful in their goal as they scored on their first 4 possessions and coasted to a 35-6 victory.

The Knights took possession at their 33 to start the contest and looked to establish their formidable rushing attack behind their big boys up front. The Knights marched through the Indians with Jake Whiting, Steve Angora, and Andrew Fox pounding the interior for good yardage. Senior QB Brandon Klinkbeil was masterful all night long in drawing the opponents offside with his inflective signal calling. Klink drew the Indians off their marks on 4 occasions, twice during the opening drive. After softening the middle up, the Knights turned to sophomore speedster Mike Farabella to finish off the scoring drive. At the 7:50 mark, Mike sped around left end for an 18-yd TD run to put LeRoy up 6-0. Kicker Ryan Duthe displayed a perfect leg all night long and made the first of his 5 PAT kicks to make it 7-zip Knights early.

Letchworth took their first possession at their own 28 after the ensuing kickoff and were met with Coach Paladino's rock hard defensive scheme. The Indians could gain just 2 yards on their drive as the Knights swarmed to the ball led by the likes of Tim Dieffenbacher, Ian Christiansen, Steve Angora, and Jason Spencer. The snap for the 4th down punt flew over the Letchworth punter's head and Duthe was on the spot to give the Knights their second possession from just 8 yards from the end zone. It took but 3 plays before Whiting went over from 2 yards out at the 4:24 mark to up the Knights' lead to 14-0 after the successful PAT kick.

Letchworth began their second drive start at their 37 after fine kick coverage by LeRoy's Slade Fitch and Phil Niccloy. Letchworth QB Jake Backer led the Indians to a first down after a nice 3rd down scramble and the hosts were at midfield. Backer took to the air to back off the LeRoy linebackers, but the drive stalled just outside the LeRoy 44. Another poor snap led to more excellent field position for the visitors as the 4th down punt never occurred after a loose scrum for the pigskin. The Knights would travel 56 yards on their third possession with Farabella running very well both inside and outside. Forty seconds into the second quarter, Farabella dashed in from 6 yards out to put the Knights up 21-0.

The Indians were met with a fine Duthe kickoff and the excellent tackling of coverage stalwart Zac Condidorio to take over at their 23 yard line. The Indians pounded their star RB Adam Shaffer into the clutches of the LeRoy defense with little success. Desperate for some momentum, the Indians risked going for a 4th-and-short from just shy of the Letchworth 33. LeRoy lineman Steve Angora made a beautiful low tackle of the rugged Shaffer to add the Indians' problems. The Knights took over and loss one yard on first down. On 2nd down, Jake Whiting burst off the left side of the LeRoy line for a big 18 yard run to the Letchworth 16. A few plays later, teammate Andrew Fox scored the Knights' fourth TD in as many tries with a 12 yard score. It was 28-0 Knights with just 8.5 minutes remaining in the first half.

Another good kick and more great kick coverage (Condidorio, Matt Forti, and Jimmy Macaluso) led to yet another poor drive start for Letchworth, this time from their 24. Letchworth QB Backer started to find his touch and converted a big 3rd-and-17 for an Indians' first down. Coach Tim McMullen's troops did manage to enter LeRoy territory (the LR 47) before being forced to punt. The Knights started deep at their 24 and continued to feature Farabella as the back of choice. Mike answered with a stellar 11-yard blast to gain a LeRoy first down at the 35. The drive was halted by the Letchworth defense and LeRoy debuted Slade Fitch as the punter. Slade booted a beauty and the Indians took over at their 32.

The Indians found their offensive rhythm on this series and marched nicely down the field with timely running and passing. Backer scrambled well, Shaffer ran hard on a draw play, and the hometown receivers were getting open downfield. With 23.3 seconds left in the first half, QB Backer floated a beautiful 14 yard TD toss to wideout Eric Tones to get the Indians on the scoreboard. The PAT kick was not successful and the score stood LeRoy 28, Letchworth 6 at the half. While the Indians passed well in the first half, they could manage but 32 yards on the ground to the Knights' 162-yard total.

Letchworth started with great field position to start the second half but that quickly dissolved with a big penalty brought on by a clip. The line of scrimmage was the Letchworth 41 and QB Backer took to the air. Jake scrambled back toward the 26-yard line where the clip occurred. Half the distance to the goal gave the Indians a whopping 1st-and-38 from their 13 yard line. Coach McMullen played it safe and ran Shaffer on 3 successive plays before having to punt to the Knights. The Knights took over at their 49 and looked to make the most of the ideal drive start. The Indians were fed a heavy dose of Farabella and had no answer in stopping him. The Knights finished off their 11-play scoring drive with an Andrew Fox 2 -yard blast at the 4:34 mark to go up 35-6 after the Duthe PAT.

The Knights' 4th quarter was marked with some stellar play from the second-teamers. Tim Andrews rushed the ball well and made his mark on defense with some fine tackling. Slade Fitch picked off a Backer miscue and returned it 15 yards for the Knights. John Zinni showed great poise at QB and registered 4 solo tackles on defense. Jimmy Mac was again effective running the rock and covering kickoffs. Junior Matt Forti showed dogged determination on special teams and some nice quickness in registering a sack of the Letchworth QB. In all, it was a very good performance as the Knights rushed for 283 total yards. Congratulations to Mike Farabella who topped the 100-yard mark for the first time in a varsity uniform with his grand 142 yards on 18 carries. Junior Tim Dieffenbacher used his speed and strength to notch 11 tackles from his linebacker position to lead the squad.
