Knights destroy Letchworth Indians 57-6
Marshall Silvernail, Justin Casper, & Mike Alexander lead the way in Homecoming victory

LeRoy - Beauty and the Beast made its annual run in the LeRoy area in the form of Homecoming 2004. Beauty was evident in the beautiful princess and queen candidates escorted at halftime and the Beast took the form of the black-and-white clad Oatkan Knights. Coach Brian Moran's squad, the #1 ranked C school among 90 others in the state, completely dominated their foes from Letchworth High 57-6 before a large crowd on a beautiful evening. The Knights amassed an incredible 566 yards of total offense with 240 coming through the air no less. Sophomore QB Mark Bennetti was given the chance to show his arm strength and he hooked up successfully on 13 of his 17 pass attempts for the 240 yards. Wideout Boo Hinett was the main target for the Bennetti gems as Boo totaled 146 yards receiving on 7 receptions. The Knights handed the ball off to 9 different running backs throughout the lopsided affair to total 326 yards on the ground. Senior Marshall Silvernail ran through and around the Letchworth defenders for a stellar performance of 160 yards on 18 rushes. Junior RB Justin Casper was all over the field rushing for 47 yards on 8 carries, scoring 3 TDs (one via a 26 yard Bennetti pass), and intercepting a pass. Junior Mike Alexander has impressed the coaches with his inspired play in practice. That hard work produced a game leading 6 tackles for Mike, a sack, a forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries. The Indians were able to net just ONE yard on their first 4 possessions and totaled just 41 yards of offense on the night.

Letchworth started with the ball first and went backwards 4 yards in the series and were forced to punt. Senior LB Andrew Fox made his presence known in the early going as evidenced with some very solid tackles. The Knights started their first series at midfield and Bennetti took to the air and threw a 25 yard pass nicely into the outstretched arms of Hinett. Three runs followed for 9 yards and the Knights went for it on 4th down (of course). The Knights were stuffed on the down and the Indians took over.

Letchworth's second chance with the ball netted just one yard in a positive direction as D Linemen John Whiting and Phil Niccloy stuffed the Letchworth runners. After another Letchworth punt, the Knights took over at the Indians' 48. Five plays later the host Knights scored their first TD of the evening with an 18 yard jaunt by Fox. The series featured the Bennetti-Hinett combo for passing gains of 14 and 10 yards. Shaun Swanson's PAT kick made it 7-0 LeRoy at the 5:03 mark of the first quarter.

More of the same followed for Letchworth. Three-and-out as Niccloy and the defense controlled the line. The Indians managed +3 yards on their third drive and the punt gave the Knights possession at their own 25. On first down, Bennetti laced a super pass to Hinett who rumbled 31 yards to the Letchworth 44. Another Hinett reception several plays later rmoved the ball to the 21. With 1:35 remaining in the opening quarter, RB Justin Casper negotiated those final 21 yards for the first of his 3 TDs of the evening. The Swanson kick made it 14-0 Knights.

The LeRoy defense led by seniors Mike Pacer, Matt Forti, and Fox, along with sophomore sensation Kevin Brady, allowed just one net yard to the Indians' offense on their fourth series in the contest. Hinett returned the subsequent Letchworth punt to the LeRoy 43. Fox was called upon to run and receive on this series and as usual Andrew delivered. Met with a 4th down, the Knights faked the kick as Bennetti hit Brady with a pass that Kevin brought down to the Letchworth 11 after a bulldozing run. Casper collected his second TD with an easy 6 yard run up the gut that was produced by the stellar play of center John Whiting, and guards Tim Dieffenbacher and Mike Pacer. The kick missed for the PAT and the score read
20-0 LeRoy at the 8:40 mark of the 2nd quarter.

Twenty-one seconds elapsed off the clock before the Knights scored yet again. The Indians fumbled the ball on their 1st down play after the kickoff and Phil Niccloy was there for the LeRoy recovery. QB Bennetti spotted a wide open Casper in the end zone and dropped a spiral into Jut's hands for Casper's 3rd TD to make it 26-0. The PAT pass failed and score remained 26-zip. At this point in the game, Mark Bennetti was having a field (and career) day finding the open receiver in the Letchworth secondary.

The next offensive series for Letchworth proved to be as futile as the others as tough defense spear-headed by Casper and numerous penalties hampered any movement but backwards for the Indians. To make matters worse, the Letchworth punt went just 8 yards, giving the Knights excellent field position at the Letchworth 33. Fox led the way for the running of Casper and newly inserted Marshall Silvernail and the score went to 33-0 when Silvernail scored from 10 yards out with 3:49 left in the first half and Swanson added the PAT.

Kicker Mike Frew gave Letchworth fits all night with his knuckleball kickoffs and the Indians started at their 34 looking to put some points on the board. The Letchworth QB went back to pass and was hurried by the pressure of DE Matt Forti. The errant pass fell into the hands of Casper for the interception. The Knights scoring machine rolled forward with Silvernail dazzling the spectators with his tough running. The drive stalled at the Letchworth 14 but the Knights picked up 3 more points as the sure-footed Swanson connected nicely on a 30 yard field goal to put LeRoy up 36-0 with 100 ticks remaining in the first half.

!00 ticks is a minute-40. Time for 2 MORE TDS! Letchworth earned the first one on a gorgeous kickoff return of 86 yards by Russell Colby to make it 36-6 after the failed PAT. Not to be outdone, the Knights practiced their 2-minute offense to perfection. More Hinett receptions (27 and 16 yards) and Fox tough inside running. With but 9 seconds remaining in the first half, Bennetti threw a 10 yard dart to wideout John Zinni to push the lead to 43-6 at the half after the Swanson PAT kick.

The Knights were unable to score on their first drive start of the 2nd half as the Indians' defense was able to contain the hosts. Letchworth proceeded to put together a good series that reached the LeRoy 25. All hopes of scoring on this drive were dashed when senior DB Zac Condidorio picked off the ball in the end zone to give his squad a drive start at the 20. More tough running by Silvernail and a dash by FB Dan Horning moved the ball for the Knights. With 5:19 to play in the 3rd quarter, Silvernail broke off a huge 50 yard run for a TD that had the crowd on their feet. The PAT run was thwarted and the Knights were up by a large 49-6 margin.

The visiting Indians were hoping for this nightmare to end. Tough defense from LB Tommy Smith and DL Aaron Scott continued to stymie the visitors. That and Marshall Silvernail. After another Letchworth punt, the Knights marched 61 yards for their final TD of the night behind the incredible rushing of Silvernail. Junior RB Mike Frew got into the act with a sweet 37 yard TD run with but 18 seconds left in the quarter. Silvernail added 2 more points with a tough run for PAT and the score moved to 57-6 with yet a quarter to play.

The Indians were denied any chance of scoring as the reserves on defense refused to buckle. Junior DE Mike Alexander became the Master of Defense in the final stanza as he stopped two Letchworth drives with a forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries, and a sack. Steve Lapp and Jon Cordiero also played well in nullifying the Letchworth offense. The game mercifully ended with the Knights taking a deliberate delay of game and several knees when they reached the Letchworth one yard line in the final minutes.

The final from Hartwood read LeRoy 57, Letchworth 6. Game 5 of the 2004 season is Friday evening in Perry for a clash with the Yellowjackets and scrambling QB Dan Leitten.
