LeRoy - The 2004 regular season finale brought the Wellsville Lions of the Southern Tier to Hartwood Park on a crisp Friday evening. First year Wellsville head coach Larry Peacock brought a rugged squad that was ready to do battle with the Oatkan Knights. With good size up front, the Lions managed to more than hold their own on the line of scrimmage and stymie the LeRoy offense up the gut. The outside lanes were a different story as LeRoy RBs Mike Farabella and Andrew Fox combined for a tremendous 413 yards of rushing and 6 TDs between the two of them.

With the 42-0 shutout win, the Knights earn the #1 seed in the upcoming Class C Sectionals in which they will try to win the 3 games necessary to capture the school's 11th Section 5 football crown. The Lions have yet to defeat the Knights in 12 meetings (0-11-1), but they always lay a lick on the gridiron. Several LeRoy fans and even an official remarked how sportsmanlike the Wellsville coach and team were throughout the heated contest. The Lions get another shot at Brian Moran's #1 state ranked team (Class C) this coming Friday evening at Hartwood as Wellsville ends up as the #8 seed in the Class C Sectional standings. The 13th meeting between the 2 programs will again be a physical affair.

Wellsville received the opening kickoff, a beautiful Mike Frew squib kick, that was nicely covered by the Knights' kickoff team. Mike has been absolutely masterful in his repertoire of kickoffs that have left the opposition scrambling for the ball as the Knights barrel full speed at them. The Lions could manage but 2 yards of offense on their initial drive start from their 35. LBs Mike Pacer and Andrew Fox and DL John Whiting set the 'rock wall' tone of the LR defense from the start.

The Knights started very deep in their territory (the 16) after the Wellsville punt. Fox smashed for 5 yards on LeRoy's first offensive play. Seventy-nine yards to the Wellsville goal line. LeRoy's speedy and tough Mike Farabella needed just 2 carries to negotiate that yardage and put the Knights on the scoreboard. After a 29-yard scamper put the ball at the midfield stripe, Farabella withstood a pop from the Lion defender and righted himself to bolt 50 yards to the endzone. The PAT kick by Shaun Swanson made it 7-0 Knights at the 9:07 mark of the opening quarter.

Another LeRoy kickoff and another 'Frew Special'. The spinning, bending, curving squib kick was mishandled by the Wellsville returner and LeRoy's Zac Condidorio covered the loose rock at the Wellsville 33. On 3rd and 9, Andrew Fox bounced off the Wellsville defense, much like Farabella's game opening TD, and charged 32 yards for a LeRoy TD to push the lead to 13-zip. The PAT kick was wide.

The Lions would realize great field position at the their 40 on the ensuing kickoff. A couple of tough runs up the gut left the visitors with a 3rd-and-5 just short of LR territory. The Knights' Phil Niccloy and John Whiting stuffed the 3rd down rush for a one yard loss, forcing a Wellsville punt. The punt was fielded by Boo Hinett who raced 80 yards for what looked to be another LeRoy score. A flag on the turf proved to be a LeRoy hold and a drive start at the 10, negating Boo's awesome effort.

The Knights moved out of the hole they were in with Fox carrying the load. Two runs for 9 yards were followed by a 34-yard gallop into Lions' territory. A non-flagrant facemask at the end of the run put the ball at the Wellsville 41. QB Mark Bennetti handed the ball off to Farabella who left all in his wake as he dashed for a LeRoy TD. The score was nullified by a holding penalty which pushed the ball back to the Lions' 49 for a 1st-and-18. The Wellsville defense kicked it up a notch after the penalty and had their way on the next several plays, blowing into the LeRoy backfield to force a 4th-and-32 from the LeRoy 37.

The LeRoy punt was fielded by the Wellsville returner who looked to the left side for an opening. What the returner found was Justin Casper who simply leveled the returnman with a vicious blow. Wellsville ball at their 41 after the bell-rung runner found his way back to the Lions' sideline. The Wellsville QB kept the ball on a keeper and picked up the 1st down to the LeRoy 48. The Knights' defense stiffened with Whiting Niccloy, Fox, and Matt Forti smothering the Wellsville QB. Another Lions' punt was necessary after back-to-back incomplete passes.

The Knights once again dug out of poor field position after the Wellsville punt with great runs by Farabella (35 yards) and Fox (12 yards). After one quarter the stats showed Fox with 98 yards on 8 carries, while Farabella had 112 yards of rushing on just 4 touches. Fox followed his 12-yard run with a 16-yarder to the Wellsville 17. Again, the Wellsville defense would rise to the occasion, forcing a turnover on downs at the 16. Three Wellsville runs moved the ball out to the 29 before the Knights forced yet another punt by the visitors.

Zac Condidorio sparked the home town team with a gorgeous 40-yard return of the Wellsville punt to give the Knights a 1st-and-10 at the Lions' 24. Farabella moved the ball down to the 6 on back-to-back runs before running mate Fox took it the remainder of the way on back-to-back 3 yard blasts up the gut. The second Fox TD pushed the score to 20-0 LeRoy after the Swanson PAT kick. The Knights stepped up on D in the closing minutes of the half to prevent any Wellsville scoring, including a blocked FG attempt by a
leaping Niccloy.

Coach Moran was not happy with the intensity of his team in the opening half and used the intermission to let the squad know that notion. The team came out 'chomping at the bit' to start the 2nd half. LeRoy kickoff artist Mike Frew was on the receiving end of the Wellsville kicoff. Mike bobbled the ball at first, found the handle, and used his speed to race 32 yards to the Wellsville 46-yard line. The hard charging LeRoy O-line (Swanson, Pacer, Whiting, Dief, Forti, and Brady) opened up the holes nicely for the dynamic tandem of Fox and Farabella and the Knights marched those 46 yards on 8 plays in 4 minutes to make it 27-0 Knights after a 2-yard plunge by Fox and a successful PAT boot by Swanson.

Wellsville found the intensity of the Knights hard to match. Fox, Dieffenbacher, and Niccloy continued to pummel the opposition. The visitors, finding yards too difficult to earn on the ground, took to the air. DB John Zinni was indeed 'Johnny on the Spot' and picked off an errant Wellsville pass to give the 'Men in Black' the ball at the Wellsville 42. Offensive coordinator Chris Cappotelli called for more of the Fox and Farabella Show and the result was yet another score at the 3:32 mark of the 3rd quarter, a 2-yard scoring plunge by Fox. QB Bennetti found his target in the end zone for the 2-point PAT pass as he zipped the ball to an open Tim Andrews. 35-0 LeRoy at this point. The Knights finished off the remainder of the 3rd quarter with yet another drive stop and the hard running efforts of junior Justin Casper. Casper kept the clock running on the visitors as he carried the ball 4 times for 30 yards. Jut is an exciting and tough player on both sides of the line of scrimmage, to say the very least.

The 4th quarter did not bring much better fortune for the Wellsville O as Mark Bennetti made an acrobatic catch of a Wellsville miscue from his DB position to give the Knights another scoring opportunity. Farabella continued to give the visitors fits and raced 37 yards for the Knights' final TD of the evening to push it to 42-0 after the Swanson kick. The Lions would finally manage some offense in the latter stages of the game as they picked up four 1st downs, moving down to the LeRoy 12. Reserves Andy Aube and Rob Morgan teamed up for a big sack to stall the Wellsville drive, which ended with a missed FG. The Knights were able to run out the remainder of the clock, featuring some tough inside running of gritty junior Dan Horning.

As stated above, the Lions return this Friday for another smashmouth affair with the Knights in Sectional tournament play. The winner of the Friday clash will meet the winner of the Avon-Canisteo/Greenwood game. The opposite bracket of the Class C tourney features unbeaten Marcus Whitman, the #2 seed, and the tough Dragons of Pembroke, the #3 seed who has lost but one game on the year. The 2004 Road to the Section 5 Class C Crown will not be an easy adventure as all of these teams can play some rugged football and know how to win. Good luck and good health to all of the participants.
