LE ROY - The difference between a well-established program and one in a rebuilding phase was never more evident than at Hartwood Park Friday. Le Roy has a program that is competing for a sectional title every year while Batavia has recycled several coaches in recent years and is far from a powerhouse in the Monroe County League.

The Oatkan Knights didn't play a perfect game, but had more than enough firepower to blast the visiting Blue Devils 37-7.

"I think we played okay," Le Roy coach Brian Moran said. "Our mental preparation wasn't where I like it with the penalties and turnovers. We turned the ball over once but the penalties hurt more than anything else. The effort was there and our kids played extremely hard."

"We had moments of greatness and moments of sloppiness," Batavia coach Dan Geiger said. "If we can clean it up we can be a solid ball club."

Penalties were the story of this one as both squads took an excessive amount of hits. Le Roy was penalized six times for 30 yards while Batavia got hit with 14 penalties for a total of 104
yards.

"We have to clean up our game and get rid of those penalties," Geiger said.

The outcome of this game was determined very early on as it was clear that the Blue Devils weren't going to be able to move the ball against the tough Le Roy defense.

Ian Humphrey returned the opening kickoff 30 yards to the Le Roy 45, then drove down to the Batavia 7-yard line, before an offsides penalty gave Le Roy a fourth-and-goal at the Batavia 4. Quarterback Mark Bennetti was sacked by Batavia's Jon Mruczek.

"I thought the kids played some solid defense, but we gave up some big plays," Geiger said.

Batavia got the ball and went three-and-out after a false start penalty and an intentional grounding call. Le Roy started at the Batavia 21-yard line after the punt return and marched right in, with Tom Bestor going 17 yards to set up a Brady Bonacquisti 2-yard plunge.

Batavia had to punt again as two penalties and the first of three fumbled snap attempts occurred. But the defense again came up big as Mruczek sacked Bennetti to kill the drive, giving Le Roy a 7-0 advantage after the opening period.

Quarterback J.J. Mazur had some struggles with pressure and the Blue Devils punted the ball away to set up the next Le Roy score.

Bennetti hooked up with sophomore wideout Mike Humphrey on a 74-yard bomb to set up a Bonacquisti 1-yard scoring run.

"It's different because you have a kid that's 6-foot-3 (Craig Tiberio) and jumps to catch everything, then you have a kid like Mike who is 5-9," said Bennetti, who went 5-of-11 for 127 yards. "It's different, it's quite an adjustment but I know he can catch it. I just need to get it there."

Batavia had another three-and-out and Bennetti did the job running the ball on the ensuing possession. Bennetti - who had 11 attempts for 60 yards and a touchdown - had three straight carries and four on the drive, scoring on a 6-yard run.

"I enjoy running the ball," Bennetti said. "I didn't really get the chance my first two years and it's
something I like doing. It's good that I have a good backup and if I get injured we will be okay."
Le Roy took a 23-0 lead going into the half as Travis Fenstermaker hit a 41-yard field goal as the time ticked off the clock.

Batavia fumbled the ball away right away to open the second half and Ian Humphrey capped off a short scoring drive with a 20-yard touchdown run, making the score 30-0.

Humphrey had three attempts for 31 yards while Bestor led all rushers with 90 yards and a TD on 16 carries.

"They compliment each other very well," Moran said. "Tommy runs hard and Ian is a slasher - he's a kid that can make a cut on a dime and go the distance."

Batavia had another quick punt and Le Roy turned the ball over on downs before the Blue Devils finally figured out what to do offensively - get the ball in the hands of J.J. Cabrera. Mazur tossed a 36-yard scoring strike to the speedy junior.

""He's a kid I'm real proud of," Geiger said of Cabrera. "He's gotten focused on what he needs to do and he doesn't let things rattle his cage. He did a great job dealing with pressure and played hard. He can make plays."

Bestor wrapped up the game's scoring late in the third quarter with a 38-yard touchdown run.

"All I do is find the hole and just run," Bestor said. "I don't care what gets in my way."

Batavia (0-1) will host Greece Arcadia at VanDetta Stadium next Friday night while the Oatkan Knights (1-0) host rival Caledonia-Mumford at 7:30 p.m.

"Caledonia/Le Roy is Caledonia/Le Roy," Moran said. "They are going to get ready to go and so are we. It'll be a war next Friday night here. We just need to get better mentally and be prepared."
