to 13-12 win over Cal-Mum

LE ROY - Don't be surprised if Ian Humphrey wakes up this morning with a backache. It's not because of the crushing hits the Caledonia-Mumford defenders were laying on the Le Roy
football players all evening Friday. It's because he put his entire team and coaching staff on his back and carried them over the final 2.5 minutes as the Oatkan Knights beat the rival Red
Raiders 13-12 at Hartwood Park.

"He needed this and we needed this from him," quarterback Mark Bennetti said. "Ian is one of those juniors that needed to make the transition up to varsity. The way he ran tonight was unbelievable. You'd think he'd been playing varsity for four years."

Humphrey had just three carries in the first week of the season, but rushed for 96 yards on 12 carries Friday. His biggest impact on the game came on a kick return and the winning touchdown run in the closing minutes.

"Ian did a great job. The individual effort he had was amazing," Le Roy coach Brian Moran said. "There's a young man that spent the winter in the weight room and his strength came through today. He did a great job."

Cal-Mum actually pulled ahead 12-7 with 2:36 left in the game. After Le Roy failed to run out the clock - because of a botched reverse called on a second-and-1 - the Red Raiders had two short runs and quarterback Steve Lauffer hit a wide-open Quentin Marozzi for a 48-yard touchdown pass.

"Right before that play, coach said watch the seem up the middle," said Bennetti, who is also a defensive back. "We ran the locks on the outside and I don't know what happened. I saw it go up and there was nothing I could do. I couldn't catch the kid."

The Red Raiders kicked the ball out of bounds and Moran forced them to re-kick. This time, Humphrey caught the ball at the 15-yard line and returned the kick to the Cal-Mum 37-yard
line, doing most of the work himself.

"I was just running and telling myself not to go down. I didn't want anybody to drag me down," Humphrey said. "I put my hand on the ground and did what I had to do."

Cal-Mum was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the kickoff so Le Roy started at the Red Raider 22 with 2:21 left on the clock. Humphrey and Bennetti had back-to-back 3-yard runs before the 5-foot-7, 145-pound back took a sweep to the left side of the line and scored from 16 yards out.

"They were calling sweep so I knew I would have to cut in really quick," Humphrey said. "I knew they'd come hard. I saw the first cut and after the guy didn't make the tackle I cut outside and just ran in."

Cal-Mum got the ball back with 55 seconds left and only managed to move the ball 15 yards on a Le Roy pass interference call and seven more yards on a Jim Garland run. Lauffer threw three straight incompletions to end the game.

The contest was a typical Cal-Mum/Le Roy battle. After the Oatkan Knights stopped the Red Raiders on the opening drive of the game, Le Roy marched right down the field with Humphrey gaining 31 yards on a reverse and a pass interference call setting up a Brady Bonacquisti 4-yard touchdown run and a Travis Fenstermaker PAT.

Marozzi had a 40-yard kick return, and Garland had a 38-yard run up the gut that set up his 5-yard touchdown run. Le Roy led 7-6 after the missed two-point conversion by Cal-Mum. Neither team had quality chances to score the rest of the game, especially the Oatkan Knights, who fought a losing field position battle in the second quarter and could never get the power running game of Tom Bestor or the passing game of Bennetti going.

Bestor stumbled to seven yards on eight carries while Bennetti hit just 6-of-16 attempts for 42 yards."They blitz very well," Bennetti said. "I didn't really handle the pressure as well as I should have. I rushed some passes and when I waited too long I got hit when I was throwing."

Part of the problem for the senior quarterback might be the difficulties he's had hooking up with his top receiver, Craig Tiberio, who has been battling a back injury early in the season.

"We definitely need to get on the same page," Bennetti said. "After two games we definitely have not looked like we did last year. But we've had some other receivers step up."

Garland rushed for 103 yards on 14 carries for the Red Raiders (0-2), who are at Perry next Friday.

"I told them that we have a lot of season left," C-M coach Mike Monacelli said. "This told the tale of what kind of ball players you are. We grew from last week. Now it's a matter of 'we know what we can do."

Le Roy (2-0) is at Letchworth.
