Hornell Raiders 22-7

Zapata, Damrath, and Bassage lead Hornell to victory under the lights at
PAETEC Park; Knights to use game to prepare for sectional title hopes

Recap by Brian Hillabush, Batavia Daily News Sports

ROCHESTER - Last year's Le Roy football team had state title aspirations and did not lose a game during the regular season. They defeated Letchworth and Caledonia-Mumford to set up a finals game with Marcus Whitman. The team that knew how to win found out how to lose, dropping the sectional finals game 25-14. This year's Oatkan Knights are heading into the Section 5 Class C tournament knowing how to win and lose after losing to Hornell 22-7 Friday at PAETEC Park.

"A loss can be the best thing for a team, especially one like we are," said quarterback Mark Bennetti. "We knew we were decent, but now we know what holes we have. We know what mistakes we have to fix."

The mistakes in this contest were as simple as not turning the ball over. Two Bennetti interceptions and an Ian Humphrey fumble proved costly as the Red Raiders were able to build a 15-0 halftime lead.

"They are a good football team. You can't get in big games and make mistakes," Le Roy coach Brian Moran said. "We can't have penalties and we can't have turnovers. Today we didn't do a very good job with either one of those things."

An early interception led to some quick points by Hornell. Midway thought the first quarter Bennetti was pressured and got picked off by a Hornell defensive back, giving the Red Raiders the ball at the Oatkan Knights' 37.

"They were blitzing and we weren't picking them up," Bennetti said. "We weren't picking them up very well and I wasn't making my reads. That isn't a very good combination. We didn't handle it well."

Quarterback John Damrath found Eric Davison on a 33-yard pass and David Zapata scored on a 2-yard run a few plays later. After a Le Roy offsides call on the extra-point attempt, Hornell went for two and Zapata punched it in for an 8-0 lead.

Le Roy started moving the ball on the next possession because of a pass interference call, but ended up punting the ball away. Hornell scored again early on in the second quarter but it wasn't Zapata - who finished the regular season with over 1,400 yards rushing - who killed Le Roy. He did have nine rushes on the 14-play drive, but didn't have a rush longer than five yards.

"All of us obviously knew we had to key on him," said Le Roy lineman John Whiting. "He is their star player and a great runner. We knew he would touch the ball a bunch of times tonight, so we keyed on him."

The big gainers for Hornell were a 21-yard pass from Damrath to Eric Davison, a costly offsides penalty by the Oatkan Knights, an 11-yard run by Mike Weyand and a 10-yard pass to Anthony Acor. Zapata capped it off with a 4-yard run.

Le Roy had a great chance to score right at the end of the half, but couldn't convert. After Kevin Brady picked off a Damrath pass and returned it 30 yards, Le Roy had four looks at the end zone. On fourth-and-10 from the Hornell 44, Bennetti tossed up a perfect Hail Mary pass to Justin Becker, who dropped the ball in the end zone.

The Oatkan Knights had the ball right back at the start of the second half and Bennetti was picked off by Ryne Hunt. Hornell drove 36 yards on 11 plays and Zapata - who gained 128 yards overall - dove in from two yards out to make the score 22-0.

"Turnovers killed us," Bennetti said. "It was the same thing last year (when we beat them 21-13). They turned the ball over and we capitalized. They knew what they were supposed to do and we just have to stop making those mistakes."

Le Roy picked up a huge first down on the ensuing drive when Chad Condidorio picked up eight yards on a reverse and more yards got tacked on because of a facemask penalty. But on the next play from the Hornell 39, Humphrey was hit at the line of scrimmage and fumbled the ball away.

Zapata did have a 61-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter taken away because of an illegal block in the back penalty. That set up a first-and-14. Bennetti intercepted Damrath and Le Roy had the ball back again at its own 33. Le Roy gained eight yards on three plays and faked a punt on fourth down. Backup quarterback Travis Fenstermaker quickly jumped behind center and took the snap, but missed Becker on a quick slant.

Hornell drove a little and then turned the ball over on downs. Bennetti and Becker hooked up on a 45-yard touchdown pass to make the score 22-7 with 5 1/2 minutes left in the game.

Hornell recovered the onsides kick attempt and Zapata had a 54-yard TD run called back by a penalty, but by the time Le Roy got the ball back it was too late to get any more points.

"When we scheduled this game, we knew it was a challenge," Moran said. "You want to play the best people and that's what we are trying to do. Hornell is good. We found out where we need to get better and do better next week and down the stretch in big games for sectional titles."

Hornell wraps up the regular season a perfect 7-0 and will be the top seed in the Section 5 Class A playoffs. The Red Raiders will host Livonia (3-4) in the opening round.

Le Roy finishes up 6-1 and will either be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in Class C. The first round game will be at home against either Wellsville or Holley.

"(We learned) that we need to get better," Whiting said. "We knew we weren't the greatest team in the world, but we now know we need to get better in a bunch of areas. We are going to come out and have a good week of practice and get ready for sectionals."
