Knights and McQuillen run
past Perry Yellowjackets 56-20

takeaway department for the Knights.

PERRY - Pregame warmups had the visiting Oatkan Knights going through their offensive and defensive schemes as usual. The Knights' #23, Tommy McQuillen, sprinted down the field to snag a long spiral throw into his arms near LR head coach Brian Moran. Moran, reverting back to the VERY old days when he was a defensive star during his scholastic and college gridiron careers, let the nearby McQuillen know that he was lucky he didn't "stick" Tommy as he was known to do in those yesteryear glory days. Tommy returned a wry smile and went on his way to prep for the contest, just minutes away. Come game time, neither the youthful Perry Yellowjackets or the Brian Moran of Gridiron Past, could stop the junior jet RB. Tommy cut, dashed, jumped, and sprung through the Perry defense for an amazing 18.6 yards/carry as he garnered 186 yards on just 10 rushing attempts and 4 TDs in leading the Knights to a convincing 56-20 victory. Many were wondering how the speedy McQuillen would fare on the new turf of Perry's excellent gridiron facility. McQuillen more than delivered on the fast surface. Only a slip at the end of yet another long sprint prevented McQuillen from a fifth score.

The Knights' offensive line was superb in opening large holes throughout the contest for McQuillen and fellow RB mates Tim Wortman, Rick Henry, and Dylan Johnson who split 189 yards of rushing between the three of them on 24 carries (nearly 8 yards/carry for the trio). The Knights led 28-0 at intermission as McQuillen notched all 4 TDs on runs of 41, 47, 3, and 16 yards. Kicker Austin Steinbrenner was true on each PAT kick, as well as 2 others in the second half, to go 6-for-6 on the night. The first-team defense was strong all evening as Perry QB Jacob Dueppengeiser was sacked, harassed, forced into fumbles, and intercepted. Steinbrenner collected 2 INTs while fellow senior Cal Whiting recovered 2 Perry fumbles. Senior LB Brad Morgan was rock solid collecting 10 tackles. Steinbrenner had 8 stops, while sophomore Marcus Mistersaro and rugged senior Matt Lyon each had 5 tackles.

The Knights registered 4 more TDs in the second half. It took just 81 seconds into the third quarter for soph RB Dylan Johnson to score from 11 yards out. The Yellowjackets' Brad Myers broke off a nice 17-yard scamper and teammate Max Mueller added the PAT to make it 35-7 LeRoy. Just under 90 seconds later, LeRoy's Rick Henry crashed over the goal line from 2 yards out. LeRoy reserve QB Andy Lowe added a 3-yard score of his own early into the 4th quarter to push the Knights' lead to 48-7.

Perry fared well down the stretch against the second team LR defense, posting 2 scores: a 19-yard run by Dueppengeisser and a second TD for Brad Myers, this time from 4 yards. LeRoy's Tim Wortman burst off the left side of the LR line for a 48-yard tally for the Knights' final points of the evening. Senior QB Tyler Fenstermaker was strong once again in guiding the LeRoy offense and tossed 4 completions in 6 pass attempts for 83 yards.

The Knights return to Hartwood Park this upcoming Friday to do battle with the unbeaten Letchworth Indians, the defending Section 5 Class C football champions led by LeRoy alum Tim McMullen. "Sticks" has put together another strong team as no team has been able to score on the Indians in their first 3 games of the season. The state ranked Letchworth squad is loaded with talented, strong, quick, and rugged personnel on both sides of the ball. Come on out this Friday evening to catch the action in front of what should be a good sized crowd of fans for both programs.
