SECTION 5 CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP 2011
Quarterfinals - Wellsville

Wayland-Cohocton Eagles
down Knights 28-8 in 2011 opener

Eagles' dynamic duo of Evan Englert and Tyler Thielges lead the visiting Eagles
to a dominating win over young Knights squad. Freshman Tommy Kelso leads the
LeRoy D with 10 tackles; Senior Tommy McQuillen notches 76 yards against strong defense.

The LeRoy Oatkan Knights took to the turf at Hartwood Park on Friday, September 2nd, to take on their first football foe of the 2011 season, the Wayland-Cohocton Eagles. The game marked just the 4th gridiron battle ever between the 2 schools. The teams first met in 1999 with the Knights taking home a resounding 48-0 victory. In the past 3 games of the series, the Knights have failed to accumulate 48 total points. The Eagles, playing tenacious defense and riding the talents of QB Evan Englert and RB Tyler Thielges, came away with their 3rd straight victory over the Knights, a convincing 28-8 win. The Eagles were considered a preseason favorite to make a serious run for the school's first ever sectional gridiron crown at the end of the season. That notion has not changed.

Wayland-Cohocton dominated the first half of play on both sides of the ball. An early miscue by the Knights gave the visitors excellent field position which they took full advantage of with a Thielges 3-yard TD run just 2.5 minutes into the game. The PAT was denied by the Knights.

A stifling Way-Co defense led by Thielges (8 tackles), Dylan Shaffer (6), Levi Wormuth (5), and Brandon Mathews (5) allowed for very few offensive highlights for the locals. Way-Co QB Englert found paydirt at the 8:43 of the 2nd quarter and his subsequent PAT run boosted the score to 14-0 Eagles. The Knights did manage to cross over into Way-Co territory with minutes remaining before the half, only to be denied on a 4th down call. The visitors took advantage of the field position and put up a third TD with 1:19 left in the first half as Englert found Joe Meyer in the end zone with a 12-yard TD pass. Two more points were tacked on when Englert threw a dart to Kyle Bush for the PAT. At the half, it was all Way-Co, 22-0.

The 2nd half saw the young Knights squad play better on both defense and offense. The defense was spearheaded by freshman LB Tommy Kelso who registered 10 tackles in his varsity debut at linebacker. Junior Archie Cappotelli, Soph Peter Privitera, and Junior Marcus Mistersaro each had fine defensive showings with 8 tackles each.

The Eagles pushed the score to 28-0 late in the 3rd quarter when the Englert-Thiegles pass-catch combo recorded a 12-yard TD score. The PAT was negated. The Knights were able to light up their side of the scoreboard in the late going when Junior Dylan Johnson scored on a one yard TD blast. Tommy McQuillen, who lead the offense with some tough inside running, added the 2-point PAT to make the final 28-8 in favor of the talented visitors.

Way-Co registered held a 15-9 edge in first downs and mustered 287 yards of total offense in their 26:40 with the ball, while LeRoy amassed 137 yards of total offense with their 21:20 time of possession. Tommy McQuillen lead the Knights with 76 yards rushing on 20 carries while Dylan Johnson added 36 yards on 12 rushes. Andy Lowe was 6 of 13 in his first full varsity game at QB for the Knights. Thielges did it all for the Eagles as he rushed for 121 yards (20 carries/1 TD), caught 5 passes for 55 yards (1TD), returned a kickoff for 24 yards, and recorded 8 solo tackles on defense.
