Game recap by Nate Rider - Batavia Daily News Sports

PERRY - The buzz around Perry in the late summer was that the Yellowjackets were looking forward to fielding an impressive football squad for the 2012 LCAA football season. It has been hard for the Perry program to gain gridiron recognition in the rough and tumble LCAA Division 2 football league. Letchworth garnered a state title last season and earned multiple sectional titles over the past several seasons. Avon has made the sectional finals 4 years running and LeRoy and Cal-Mum have been dominant programs for decades. The promise of a formidable Perry team was indeed realized on Friday evening (9/28) as the Yellowjackets, led by the strong arm and will of QB Cory Dillon, and a team loaded with speed, talent, and heart, pulled off a most thrilling 44-36 win over the visiting Oatkan Knights, who are having a pretty good season themselves.

The Perry spread offense, the LCAA's version of the Greatest Show On Turf, gave the Knights fits all evening. With but a minute remaining, Dillon lofted a TD jump ball to WR Jake Kiehle who snagged the 11-yard TD toss while heavily covered by the LeRoy defense. The TD was Kiehle's third of the evening and likely one of the sweetest ever witnessed in Perry football history as it resulted in Perry's second ever win over the LeRoy program.

LeRoy had not lost to Perry since a 7-0 Perry win 21 years ago. The teams first met in 1906 and have played each other 33 total times, the Knights winning 31 of those contests by outscoring the Yellowjackets 1,232-272. At 10:40 PM the local fire sirens sounded in celebration throughout the village of Perry to note the exceptionally satisfying and well earned victory. Perry not only promised their fans a fun-to-watch winning team this season, they delivered it. Congrats to the Perry program for the big win and good luck in the upcoming run at a sectional title.

The following is the recap of the contest by Nate Rider of the Batavia Daily News Sports Desk:

PERRY - In the first half between Le Roy and Perry on Friday night, offense was the story. In the second half the defenses took over. Either way, in a classic case of back-and-forth Livingston Conference football, the Yellowjackets scored on a 4th down play with just over a minute left when Cory Dillon scrambled to find Jake Kiehle in the end zone for an 11-yard score and a stunning 44-36 upset over the previously unbeaten Oatkan Knights.

Dillon was simply unstoppable all night as he completed 26 of 41 passes for 299 yards and 4 touchdowns and ran for another 53 yards as Perry moved to 4-1 on the season. The last minute touchdown was the third time Dillon and Kiehle connected for a score on the night.

A 5-yard strike from Dillon to Kiehle in the first quarter made it 8-0 Perry and then - following a Peter Privitera 69-yard touchdown run for Le Roy - a 10-yard Dillon-Kiehle hookup and another 2-pt PAT put Perry up 16-6.

The 2 teams combined to score 42 points in the first quarter and 64 points in the first half - but only 2 late 4th quarter TDs in the second half. All evening the 2 teams traded scores back and forth.

Privitera struck on another scoring run in the first quarter for the Oatkan Knights - this time a 13-yard scamper as well as the PAT run- to cut the Perry lead to 16-14.

Christian Hollister then added a 22-yard score for Perry to make it 22-14 after the failed 2-pt conversion before Le Roy quarterback Mike McMullen connected with Kylan Carter on a 41-yard pass to make it 22-20 Perry after only one quarter.

Dillon hit Anthony Ricotta with a 43-yard touchdown pass and Hollister returned a kickoff for a touchdown following a Dylan Johnson three-yard run in the second quarter to make it 36-28 Perry heading into the second half of the offense-minded battle.

The third quarter was scoreless as the defenses adjusted after the wild first half of action.

Late in the fourth quarter the Perry defense came up huge with a goal line stand to thwart a potential tying score by the LeRoy offense. Perry took to the field to run the clock down with their potent offense. With the game seemingly well in hand, disaster struck for the locals when Le Roy linebacker Tom Kelso returned an interception of a Dillon pass 48 yards for a score to tie the game at 36 after the successful PAT run.

Dillon more than atoned for his miscue with a brilliant 60-yard drive, culminating in victory when he found Kiehle in the back of the end zone for the game-winning score on 4th-and-goal from the 11- yard line.

"We had a pass called and Le Roy sent a couple of guys on the blitz," said Perry head coach Jeremy Ohlson. "Dillon scrambled and he was very smart about it. He knew it was 4th down and threw it up for grabs and our wide receiver made a great catch."

Eli McWhinney picked off a McMullen pass with 42 seconds left to seal the deal for Perry.

Dillon finished the game with 299 net yards of passing, completing an astonishing 26 passes in 41 attempts. Kiehle finished the night with 10 catches for 79 yards and 3 scores while teammate Anthony Ricotta pulled in 9 balls for 124 yards and a score. Dillon added 53 yards of rushing on 16 carries. The Perry defense was lead by Jake Sylvester with 5 stops, while TJ McGinnis, Christian Hollister, David Dillon, and Elijah McWhinney each were credited with 4 tackles.

Le Roy was led by Peter Privitera who rushed for a game-high 150 yards on 18 carries, while Marcus Mistersaro added 41 yards rushing on just 4 totes qnd 45 yards on 3 pass receptions. QB Mike McMullen was 6 of 13 for 93 yards and a TD pass. On defense, the Knights were led by Kelso's 10 tackles and TD interception. Ryan McQuillen had 9 stops while Kody Lamkin (3 tackles for lost yardage) and Kylan Carter each recorded 7 tackles. Strong defensive play was also turned in by the Knights' Alex Dunn, Jon Pierce, and Dylan Johnson, each with 6 tackles.
