LE ROY - The last three games between Route 5 rivals Le Roy and Caledonia-Mumford didn't quite live up to the hype of the series that dates back to 1900. Yet that all changed Friday night at Hartwood Park.

The Oatkan Knights - who had struggled on offense all night long - overcame a late deficit to score 10 points in the game's final three minutes to stun the Red Raiders 19-12 to capture the annual contest for the first time since 2008.

"Our kids hung in there and they fought until the end," said Le Roy head coach Brian Moran. "And you know what? In that fourth quarter we made some plays to win and I give these kids a lot of credit. They played outstanding today."

Moreover, the loss for Cal-Mum means that it will not make the sectional playoffs for the first time in school history.

With leading running back Peter Privitera out for the game with an injury, the Oatkan Knights couldn't generate any momentum for the first three quarters as the team that came into the night as one of the highest-scoring teams in Section 5 was held to just five first downs in the first half and none in the third quarter.

Le Roy managed just 31 yards rushing in the first half on 12 carries while Cal-Mum controlled the clock with quarterback Kurtis Haut, who finished the night with 157 yards on 31 totes.

Toward the end of a scoreless first quarter, the Oatkan Knights did, however, embark on a 13-play drive that spanned into the second quarter and saw them get as far as the Cal-Mum 19. However, following a failed pitch attempt that lost 13 yards and an incomplete pass, Mike McMullen was intercepted by Chris Wilson, who returned the ball to the 37-yard line.

The Red Raiders then pounced.

Joey Cappotelli and Haut netted big gains on the ground and a Le Roy pass interference aided a 10-play, 63-yard drive that was capped by a Haut 2-yard touchdown run that made it 6-0 with 5:29 left in the half after the conversion attempt failed.

Yet Le Roy came right back.

Following a pass interference on Cal-Mum, McMullen hit Ryan McQuillen with a short pass and McQuillen did the rest as he took it 53 yards down the sideline to give Le Roy the lead at 7-6 after the successful PAT kick by Dylan Johnson.

The Red Raiders swung the momentum back and took the ball all the way to the Le Roy 1-yard line where Haut was stuffed in his tracks by Archie Cappotelli with no time left on the clock to send the Oatkan Knights into the half with the one-point lead.

"We know he's a great runner but we just had to be physical with them," said Archie Cappotelli.

The third quarter started out all Cal-Mum when on the first play of the half McMullen had his pass attempt tipped at the line and picked off by Justin Wade at the Le Roy 40-yard line.

Four plays later - all Haut runs - Haut plunged in from one-yard out to give the Red Raiders the lead back at 12-7 just 1:28 into the third after the conversion attempt again failed.

"I'm not really sure what did it (kept our heads up)," said Marcus Mistersaro. "Just playing Caledonia you have to be in it until the end."

The Oatkan Knights would then punt on their next two possessions - in which they managed just nine yards. However, the second punt pinned the Red Raiders at their own 15. A three-and-out then had Cal-Mum punting but the snap sailed through the hands of Jake McEwen, who promptly kicked the ball out of the endzone for a safety that cut the lead to 12-9.

Then after the two squads traded punts, the Le Roy offense finally started to get in gear - behind Mistersaro.
The big senior led a nine-play drive with 37 yards on the ground that ended in a Dylan Johnson 21-yard field goal that tied the game at 12 with just 3:38 remaining in the game.

Mistersaro finished the game with a team-high 95 yards rushing - all in the second half - on just eight carries.

"There's a perfect example of a young man who spent his winter in the weight room and it showed because he just dominated the fourth quarter," said Moran.

"They just gave me the ball and everything just worked out," added Mistersaro. "All the credit goes to the line, they worked really hard."

The Le Roy defense then stepped it up and forced a Red Raiders three-and-out and a punt which gave the Oatkan Knights the ball on their own 32-yard line with just two minutes remaining.

Then it was Mistersaro time again when in just two carries he single-handedly moved the ball to the Cal-Mum 15. Two plays later Tom Kelso took it in from three yards out to give Le Roy the 19-12 lead with just 39.3 remaining.

The defense then did the rest and Le Roy walked off the field with the dramatic win and all the momentum it could ask for heading into next week's sectional playoffs.

"It's been a great season simply because the kids came in ready to play," said Moran. "It's enjoyable when you come out to practice and they work hard and you've got young men that are willing to learn and do the things you ask them to do. It's just a pleasure to coach them."

Kelso finished the game with 16 carries for 63 yards.

The Le Roy defense held Cal-Mum to just 81 yards of offense in the second as it showed the heart to overcome its poorest offensive performance of the season - just 222 yards - to come away with the biggest victory of the season. Kody Lamkin and Zach Fitzsimmons each were credited with 10 tackles, while Archie Cappotelli and Kelso each earned 9 stops. Dylan Johnson, solid on the critical game-tying field goal was also solid on defense with 7 tackles.

"We knew we would have a good team this year and everyone was doubting us at the beginning," said Archie Cappotelli. "But we've been showing them that we can play and we're for real."
