LE ROY - By the end of the first half of Le Roy's Class C sectional quarterfinal game against Holley, it had seen quite enough of the Hawks' Cadizsh Norford. So at halftime the Oatkan Knights figured out how to stop the talented senior running back - don't let the Holley offense get its hands on the ball.

Le Roy opened the second half with a 19-play, 60-yard drive that took 10:40 off of the clock, while the Oatkan Knights' power running game kept the ball for all but 3:02 of the second half and added a late insurance touchdown to escape with a 26-18 win at Hartwood Park.

"You know what, they are very well coached, they are very physical and 22 (Norford) is one of the best football players I've seen in my 24 years," said Le Roy head coach Brian Moran. "I thought our kids hung in there, we made some plays when we needed to and this time of year you just have to get ready to play."

Norford did score on one of his only two touches in the second half but Le Roy held the Hawks to just 11 plays after the break - mostly desperation passes at the end of the fourth quarter.

Dylan Johnson scored all four touchdowns for the Oatkan Knights and senior running back Kylan Carter led an impressive, ball-control ground game that amassed 320 yards on the night as Le Roy held the ball for 33:27 of the game.

Carter finished with 106 yards on just nine carries, Marcus Mistersaro had 99 yards on 14 carries, Tom Kelso bruised his way to 79 yards on 27 touches and Johnson finished with 38 yards and his four scores.

And they did it all without leading rusher Peter Privitera, who was out again with an injury.

"I think Carter was exceptional tonight," said Moran. "There is a guy who stepped in and had an opportunity tonight to make some plays for us and I tell you what, he made some plays."

"This means a lot," added Mistersaro. "When a guy like Peter is out a lot of guys are going to have to step up to take his place and we were able to do that tonight."

Norford had 123 yards on the ground in the first half but had just one carry for 15 yards in the second.
"You just have to get to him, break down and try not to give him too much space," said Mistersaro of dealing with Norford. "You just have to make the tackle."

But it appeared early on the Le Roy (7-1) was primed to run away with this one. After Mistersaro recovered a Nick Conklin fumble on Holley's first drive of the game, the Oatkan Knights promptly marched 50 yards in eight plays and capped the drive with a Johnson one-yard plunge and PAT kick to go up 7-0.

Early in the second quarter Le Roy struck again. After taking over at their own 33-yard line following a Hawks punt, the Oatkan Knights needed just seven plays to go 67 yards - all runs and aided by a Carter 52-yard sprint down the right sideline - to score on another Johnson one-yard run to go up 13-0 after the kick failed.

Then it was time for the Holley running game to flex its muscles as Norford and Conklin alternated carries to 68 yards in just over four minutes with the exclamation point being a Norford 22-yard touchdown run around right end to close the gap to 13-6.

Holley then forced a Le Roy punt and Norford was at it again less than three minutes later when he took the snap in the Wildcat formation and started right, cut back to the left and outran the Le Roy defense for 61 yards to stun the Oatkan Knights crowd and cut the lead to 13-12 after a conversion run failed with just 29 seconds remaining in the half.

The Hawks tallied 172 yards on the ground in the first half but managed just 18 in the second half. Moreover, Le Roy held Holley's second-leading runner Zach Hogle to just 15 yards on six carries - all in the first half.

The Oatkan Knights drive to start the second half had no plays longer than eight yards, saw them faced with a first-and-23 after an illegal block call and converted three fourth-down plays, including another Johnson one-yard run that put Le Roy up 19-12.

"That was huge because the more we ran the clock the better off we were," said Moran. "I thought our kids offensively up front played extremely well, we moved the ball well and we scored."

Again the PAT failed, but there was just 1:15 remaining in the third. The two teams then traded punts before Holley (4-4) got the ball back with just 7:30 remaining in the game when Norford - again - would need just one play. This time he was split out left and quarterback Kyle Bell found him streaking down the field for a beautiful 44-yard throw and catch that again shocked Le Roy and cut the lead to one at 19-18.

Holley would go for two but Norford was stopped by a slew of Oatkan Knights as they retained the lead.

However, this was the time that mentally tough teams get strong and that is exactly what Le Roy did.
The Oatkan Knights used nine plays to barrel their way from their own 34 to the Holley 18 before the Hawks let Johnson score on an 18-yard run up the middle with 2:16 left. With the Johnson extra point it was 26-18.

If the Hawks didn't let Johnson free, Le Roy could have run the clock out. But the strategy failed as Holley threw four incomplete passes on its next possession and was unsuccessful on a desperation Norford pass on the final play of the game.

"This means a lot," said Mistersaro. "A lot of people care about this program and they like to see us win."
Norford, Hogle and Conklin had been a three-headed monster late in the season as Holley reeled off four straight wins but it was only Norford who reached the century mark Friday night as Conklin finished with just 39 yards rushing. Bell finished 4-of-11 for 69 yards for Holley with the one score.

Defensively, the Oatkan Knights were led in tackling by Kelso with 8 and Johnson with 7 stops. Mistersaro was credited with 4 tackles and snagged 2 passes from QB Mike McMullen who was 3-of-5 passing on the night.
