ROCHESTER - After Bath took the opening kickoff on a time-consuming scoring drive to open its Class C football sectional semifinal, Le Roy's Tommy Kelso wanted to make amends. The 5-foot-7, 160-pound sophomore took the ensuing kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown that helped spark No. 2-seeded Le Roy to the 44-27 victory over No. 6 Bath Saturday at Sahlen's Stadium.

Kelso actually fumbled the kick, picked it up on the second bounce and ran through a seam towards the left, where he found space and went down the sideline for the momentum-changing score.

"One kid got his arm on me but there was a big hole and I just ran through it," said Kelso. "I was glad to give our team a spark."

While Kelso and the Oatkan Knights got the win, it was obvious from the opening whistle that Bath came to play for more than just pride. Bath had lost to Le Roy 42-12 early in the season at Hartwood Park. But they had reeled off an impressive shutout in the quarterfinals over Elba/Byron-Bergen. And with the return of standouts Matt Nevius and Kendall Winslow, both who missed the first meeting, the Rams seemed destined for revenge.

After Kelso answered Bath's first score, the Rams rallied back as Danny Leonard capped off a 9-play, 67-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge that put them up 13-7 with 4:38 left in the first.

But Le Roy had an answer, something they had all night for Bath. And it came from sophomore quarterback Mike McMullen. Known more for handing off than putting the ball in the air, McMullen shredded the Bath defense for 150 yards passing and one TD.

McMullen's first big pass completion came after a 15-yard penalty by Le Roy forced a first and 25 as McMullen hit fellow classmate Ryan McQuillen for a 30-yard reception. Two plays later, Peter Privitera scored from 29 yards away and Le Roy took the 14-13 lead with 1:50 still left in the first.

Bath responded with a well-executed scoring drive that saw Leonard hit Mitch Fuller with back-to-back 18-yard receptions to set up Leonard's 2-yard TD run that made it 19-14 after one quarter.

After three turnovers in the next four possessions, Le Roy finally broke through as McMullen found McQuillen again, this time for a 37-yard scoring pass that put the Knights in front 21-19 at the break.

"It was a fade route and I saw they had a slower kid on Ryan," said McMullen. "I just put it out there and he made a nice run on it."

Bath wasn't as fortunate to go toe-to-toe with Le Roy in the second half after Privitera scored on Le Roy's first snap after the intermission on a 57-yard run up the middle. Bath coach Wayne Carroll says there was a big reason why Privitera had so much space on the opening play of the second half. Winslow, Bath's 5-foot-10, 190-pound nose tackle, who was disrupting Le Roy's running game in the first half, was out with a leg injury he suffered in the second quarter.

"That really hurt us when Winslow went down," said Carroll. "That was the turning point when Kendall went out of the game. That's when you could feel the air go out of our defense."

The Rams showed resiliency on their next drive when Mitchell Buckley took the pitch and went down the far sideline for a 37-yard touchdown run. Buckley, who was Bath's leading rusher all season, was held to just three yards on three carries in the first half but his touchdown was hoping to ignite the Rams for the next quarter and a half.
That wasn't happening.

Back-to-back Kelso TDs - both from a yard out - stretched the Le Roy lead to 42-27. The second score was the nail in Bath's coffin as Le Roy's offense cashed in a 14-play drive that chewed up nearly seven minutes of the clock.

"I thought our offensive line gave us an outstanding four-quarter effort," said Le Roy coach Brian Moran. "We wore them down up front a little."

Le Roy tacked on a safety with 4:07 left.

The second half was a much different story for the Le Roy defense, which allowed 11 first downs and 216 yards of total offense in the first 24 minutes.

After the intermission, however, Le Roy limited Bath to five first downs and just over 100 yards of offense.

"(Le Roy) has a very good defense," said Leonard, who finished with 105 yards rushing on 24 carries and three TDs and was 9-of-21 passing for 165 yards and three interceptions. "They made some nice halftime adjustments and we had trouble moving the ball like we moved it in the first half."

Privitera, Le Roy's junior running back, led all ball carriers with 127 yards on 14 touches with two TDs. After missing the previous two games with a shoulder injury, Privitera left in the third quarter with an ankle injury and did not return. Kelso added 43 yards on 11 totes with two TDs, while Dylan Johnson had 32 yards on five carries.
McQuillen finished with 74 yards on three catches while Marcus Mistersato had three catches for 72 yards.

The victory puts the Oatkan Knights (8-1) into a title game showdown with three-time defending state champion and top-seeded Hornell (9-0) at 5 p.m. Friday. The Red Raiders have won 48 consecutive games.

"The pressure is definitely going to be on them," said Moran, who has guided the Oatkan Knights' storied program to 13 of their 14th sectional titles. "Nobody expected us to get this far so we won't feel any pressure. I expect us to put in a great week of practice and play a tough game. I'm very proud of this group."
