Game recap by Phil Livingston - Livingston County News Sports
AVON - With just seconds remaining in the first half of last Friday night's homecoming affair with visiting LeRoy, the Avon Braves were poised for a score that would either give them the lead or pull them within 2 points - both pretty good ways to hit the locker room against the powerful LeRoy Oatkan Knights.

Instead, what they got was an interception and 99-yard touchdown by LR sophomore Nick Egeling to help put the Knights up 21-9, and set the stage for a 34-17 LeRoy victory in Livingston D-2 action. Up to that point the Braves were going toe-to-toe with the No. 3 Class C state ranked Knights, and looking like they were capable of pulling off the homecoming upset in front of a large crowd.

Avon got on the board first with an 11-play game-opening drive from the 35, highlighted by back-to-back clutch passes from junior QB Joey Sotak. On third-and-18 from the LeRoy 33, Sotak hit sophomore Zack Loomis for 7 yards, and on fourth-and-9 launched a laser-guided missile to the right pylon, hitting senior Johnny Ambroselli in stride for the score. A bad snap on the wet field scuttled the extra-point attempt, leaving the score at 6-0 Braves with 7:24 to play in the opening quarter.

The Knights responded on the ensuing possession with a 13-play drive from their 20 behind senior Peter Privitera and junior Tom Kelso, who pounded up the field until the Braves had a chance to hold them on a fourth-and-4 at the Avon 19. But Kelso went off left tackle all way to the house and junior Jon Pierce added the PAT kick to make the score 7-6 Knights with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter.

Avon answered quickly following junior Brandon Mynter's return to the Avon 35. Sotak went off left guard to the 49, senior Dan Welch picked up a yard to the 50, and Sotak broke down the left sideline all the way to the 5, with junior Ryan McQuillen fighting off a blocker to make the TD-saving tackle for LeRoy. McQuillen's effort paid off as the Knights pushed Avon backward from there on a sack by Privitera and junior Kody Lamkin. Avon settled for a 32-yard field goal to make it 9-7 with 11:02 on the clock in the second quarter.

LeRoy regained the lead on the next series following junior Jake Henry's kickoff return to the LeRoy 31. The Knights marched down the field in 10 plays culminating in a 38-yard TD completion from junior Mike McMullen to Kelso. The Pierce PAT kick put the Knights up by a 14-9 with 6:06 remaining before intermission.

That was plenty of time for the Braves to get back down the field, and with the help of a gutsy fake punt call from their own 36, made it from the 27 to the LeRoy 4 in 13 plays. A second-and-3 from there lost 2 yards, and on third-and-goal the lefty Sotak fired the ball toward the end zone. T
hat's when Egeling stepped in front of the ball at the one.

"I was in the right position and I saw it all the way", Egeling said. "Then I just took off running."

Breaking up the left sideline, Egeling outran everyone, including Sotak, who got a hand on him at midfield but couldn't bring him down. After Egeling crossed the goal line with 14 seconds left in the half, Pierce once again added the PAT kick to make it 21-9 Knights. The electric shock momentum shift left the Braves hanging on the brink.

The Knights would push the Braves over the brink with their opening drive of the second half.

Henry returned the third quarter kickoff to the LeRoy 48, and 14 plays later Egeling was in the end zone again, this time the recipient of a fourth-and-7 pass from McMullen from the Avon 15.

"We have had some injuries so I've been working out as a tight end," said Egeling, normally a running back for the Knights. "I just got open and Mike put it in there."

Pierce made it 28-9 with 4:57 left in the third, and the LeRoy defense took over from there.

LeRoy pushed their lead to 34-9 with just over 6 minutes remaining in the game on a 46-yard touchdown reception by the "Mc" combo of Mike McMullen and Ryan McQuillen.

The Braves played for pride and added a 1-yard score from Welch with 2:59 left in the contest. The PAT was successful to make the final 34-17 LeRoy.

McMullen finished 9-of-14 for 133 yards and a TD and Lamkin led the LeRoy defense with 12 tackles. Sotak hit 11-of-24 attempts for 132 yards and a score, and carried 18 times for 136 yards. Welch led the Avon defense with a total of 11 stops.
