Game recap by Nate Rider - Batavia Daily News Sports
WEBSTER - For the third consecutive season, the Le Roy football team is headed to the Section 5 Class C finals. And this time, the Oatkan Knights made it look easy. And with it, Le Roy will get another shot at its 15th sectional title in the storied history of its program and the 14th in the illustrious career of head coach Brian Moran.

Tom Kelso ran for 117 yards and three touchdowns, Mike McMullen threw for 121 and Ryan McQuillen accounted for a pair of scores, while the stout Le Roy defense pitched a 54-0 shutout as the No. 1 seed Oatkan Knights rolled over No. 4 Dansville in Saturday's semifinal at Webster Thomas.

"I just thought everybody played well today, I thought they prepared well," said Moran, who is in his 26th and final season on the sidelines for Le Roy. "There is no secret, we win games in practice and I thought our kids practiced extremely well, top to bottom. I was really impressed with our second group that went in today and played; I thought they did a great job."

Despite the fact that this will be his 18th trip to the sectional finals, the feeling never gets old for Moran. "It still is exciting," he said. "I say it all the time: The greatest part of coaching is interacting with the kids and that's always special."

Le Roy will meet No. 3 Bath in the final; the Rams topped East Rochester/Gananda 51-19 in the other semifinal.

Kelso ran for 117 yards on 16 carries and scored all three touchdowns before the half to lead a Le Roy rushing attack that totaled 207 yards on 39 carries. Meanwhile, McMullen was his usual spectacular self as he finished 8-of-12 and a pair of touchdowns and barely missed on a third and fourth despite the wet and cold conditions.

"We just came out and we played the way we are capable of playing: no mistakes," said Kelso.

Even with the hard running of senior back Evan Dieter, Dansville could muster nothing up against an Oatkan Knights defense that had allowed just 80 points on the season entering the game.

Dieter ran for 93 yards - 58 in the second half - on 24 carries, but the Mustangs could were never able to sustain a serious drive until late in the contest. Dansville quarterback Ethan Mapes finished just 4-of-14 for 52 yards and a pair of interceptions as Le Roy turned the Mustangs over four times and allowed them just 203 yards of offense.

Meanwhile, McQuillen set the tone of the afternoon early.

Following a first down on its first play of the game, Dansville was immediately forced to punt, which it mistakenly did the senior speedster McQuillen, who easily outraced the Mustangs special teams coverage for a lightning fast 75-yard touchdown less than three minutes into the game.

"He just makes great plays," said Moran of McQuillen. "With his speed, it's something that you can't duplicate in practice. You can't see it. I don't think people realize how fast he really is and he can scoot."

"It's a momentum changer when you see something like that," added Kelso.

Dansville managed a first down on its next possession, but on a second-and-11 Mapes and Dieter mishandled an exchange and the Oatkan Knights recovered the ball at the Dansville 32-yard line.

McMullen found Jon Pierce on a 15-yard pass on Le Roy's first offensive play and then Kelso burst up the middle and broke it outside on the next play for a 17-yard score to put the Oatkan Knights up 15-0 after a Kelso run on the conversion.
The Mustangs then fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which Le Roy recovered, and the Oatkan Knights wasted no time putting this one away.

On Le Roy's very next play, McMullen found McQuillen for a beautiful 32-yard touchdown pass to put the Oatkan Knights up 22-0 with more than seven minutes left in the opening frame and before many of the Dansville fans had even found their seats.

McQuillen caught just one more pass on the day, but his damage had already been done for a Le Roy team which is currently ranked third in the state in Class C.

Dansville went three-and-out on its next possession and this time the Oatkan Knights took their time finding the end zone, relatively speaking.

Le Roy promptly went 58 yards on eight plays and capped the drive with a 12-yard score from Kelso up the middle to go up 29-0 on a shell-shocked Dansville group; this time the Oatkan Knights drive took two-and-a-half minutes off the clock.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the final three quarters were simply a formality.

"You just have to play it game by game. You never know what is going to happen. Upsets happen; we just look at the game ahead of us," said Kelso.

After another Dansville punt, Le Roy marched down the field yet again, this time 70 yards on nine plays in just over three minutes to go up an insurmountable 36-0 on another easy touchdown run from Kelso, this one from two yards out.
Kelso had 90 of his yards in the opening half on 11 carries as the Oatkan Knights' first-team offense played just one series in the second half.

Dieter was held to 34 yards on 15 totes in the opening half as Dansville's only big plays came from impressive senior wide receiver Gage Koch, who had four catches for 47 yards and 52 yards rushing on 6 carries.

Mapes was intercepted on Dansville's next two possessions - one by Nick Egeling and one by Pierce, the second of which came after Le Roy was actually forced to punt and was returned 15 yards to the Dansville 10; McMullen found Jake Henry for a 10-yard score two plays later to make it 42-0 at the break after the kick was blocked.

"I think the bottom line is that they enjoy to play," said Moran of his team. "They have instilled in themselves for a long time to get themselves ready to play. I just think that is the key to the whole thing."

The Oatkan Knights had 210 yards of offense in the opening half and eight first downs.

Egeling capped the first-team's day with a 1-yard plunge on Le Roy's first possession of the second half that finished an eight-play, 57-yard march, aided by a 33-yard screen pass to Kelso which took the Oatkan Knights down to the 1.
Le Roy capped the scoring in the fourth when a pair of sophomores connected - quarterback John Laurie found Ryan Boyce for a 5-yard touchdown with just over eight minutes to play.

Laurie had a solid second half in his first sectional action as he finished 3-of-4 for 23 yards and scrambled for 27 yards on a fourth-and-21.

Egeling finished with 34 yards on six carries and Nate Flint added 25 yards on six carries in the second half for Le Roy, which moved to an impressive 9-0 on the season; Dansville ended its season at 5-4.

The Oatkan Knights dropped a tough game to then-powerhouse Hornell two years ago and were upended by upstart Wayland-Cohocton in 2013.

"We talk about it all the time - you can't worry about what has happened, you can only prepare yourself for the future," said Moran. "I think the kids really understand that you have to get yourself focused. You can't just assume that you are going to walk in and everything is going to fall your way. You have to prepare yourself through hard work and dedication to put yourself in a situation to win a sectional title."

"I've been there two years. We haven't gotten one and this is the year that we want to change that," added Kelso. "What happens in the past is in the past; we're just looking for number 15."
