Game recap by Barney Mase - LeRoy Football Team Statistician

HORNELL - Former LeRoy head varsity coach Brian Moran stressed in his Batavia Daily News article that the game between the Knights and the Hornell Raiders would come down to two things, turnovers and penalties. LeRoy won the turnover battle, committing none, while Hornell lost a fumble late in the game in their own territory. Unfortunately, LeRoy was not able to capitalize. Penalties were another story. The Knights committed 5 turnovers to Hornell's 4. All penalties are costly, but the Knights' were really hurtful. All five penalties were flagged when LeRoy was on Hornell's side of the field. All five penalties were inside the Hornell 30. On one penalty, LeRoy was able to overcome and still score a TD. The other four mistakes stopped drives.

Here are some strange stats. In regulation, LR ran 76 plays to Hornell's 30. That is not a misprint. In the second half alone, the Knights had 45 plays to Hornell's 9. Again, not a misprint. Roughly, the time of possession was in LeRoy's favor 36 to 12 minutes.

It was a tough loss. The Oatkan Knights played hard and did not quit after the loss to Bath last week. Nick Egeling had another huge game with 39 carries for 169 yards. He was three carries short of tying Ryan Novak's 42 in 1994. LR's defense limited the number of plays for 20+ yards to two for this game. Trenton Smith, Hornell's leading rusher, did not earn 100 yards, as he ended with 95 yards on 14 carries.

Hornell received the opening kickoff and on their very first play they ran a halfback option pass which netted 34 yards and a first down at the LeRoy 27. The Men in Black then stopped Trenton Smith for no gain. Hornell suffered their first penalty, a false start, pushing the locals back five yards. Smith then ran for two and on 3rd-and-13, Justin DiFalco sacked the Raiders' QB for a 6-yard loss. Hornell elected to punt from the LR 36, trying to pin the Knights deep. The result was a 15-yard punt.

Nick Egeling ran three straight times for a LeRoy first down. Two plays later, on 3rd-and-4, Nick ran for seven yards to pick up another first down. Nate Flint blasted for eight yards, which moved LR into Hornell territory. Dom Filio's run for 10 yards earned a first down for the Knights at the Hornell 36. Three plays later, facing a 4th-and-1, Egeling grounded out two tough yards for the first down. Nick then gained nine and then gets hit late going out of bounds. Late hit on the Red Raiders, but the officials only mark off 5 to the 11 (later the officials explained the penalty was at the 21, they must have thought Nick went out at the 21). Nick gains one and then nine yards to the Hornell 1, but here comes LR's first penalty, an illegal block at the nine. Backed up to the 19, Nick gains seven for a 3rd-and-11, but alas, here comes penalty #2, false start. LR is now staring at a 3rd-and-16. Nick bulls for one yard as the first quarter comes to a close. An end around by Josh Laurie gains four yards and the Knights turn the ball over on downs. That first drive was 18 plays which used up 9:09, but yielded zero points.

Deep at their own 10, Hornell picks up big yardage on 3 straight plays. Trenton Smith for 13, Jake Weyand (QB) runs for 14, and then a Weyand-to-Jake Henby (top receiver) pass for 18 to the LeRoy 41. The Raiders move to the LeRoy 28 before the Knights stiffen on D. A big play was Dom Filio stopping the speedy Smith for a three yard loss. A stiff fourth down pass rush forced a Hornell pass incompletion, giving LR a drive start at their own 33.

Dom for 2 yards and then Josh attempts his first pass of the game, hitting Reed Kacur for 20. Nick for 8, Nate for a -2, Josh for 3, and on 4th-and-1, Nick powers for 9 for the first down. Nick for another five to the 22. Josh does an end sweep for seven and an apparent first down at the 15, but here comes penalty #3, holding in the backfield at the 26. Backing up 10 to the 36, LR now has a 2nd-and-19, instead of 1st-and-10 at the 15. Josh is sacked for a loss of 5 and then on third down, Nick runs for one. LR punts the ball 13 yards to the 28. The Knights' 11-play drive took 5:41 off the clock, but again, resulted in no score.

Hornell runs three plays as the first half ends.

The Knights start the second half with Nick picking up 20, two, and four (into Hornell territory) and then eight to Hornell 39. Josh hits Nate Flint for 12. Dom for one and then Nick picks up eight on two carries setting up a 4th-and-1. Running into the heart of the Hornell defense, Nick picks up two and a first down at the 16. Penalty #4, a false start, sets up a 1st-and-15. Dom for two, followed by consecutive incompletions sets up another fourth down, 4th-and-13 to be exact.

Josh finds Reed Kacur over the middle for 16 for the FD at the Hornell three. Reed was hit by two defenders while catching the ball. Great catch. Nick loses one, Dom gains one, and then one more to the 2-yard line, setting up another fourth down.

Nick takes the pitch to the left and then cuts back, running into the end zone. Mary Purdy kicks the extra point, LR 7-0. 17 plays and 8:16 off the clock and this time, a score to show for the great efforts!

The momentum was short lived. Starting at their 44, Hornell needed just two play to score. Trenton Smith up the middle for 41 yards and then around end for 15 more and the TD. Jake Weyand kicked the PAT true to tie the game at 7.

Two plays and 15 seconds off the clock.

Now late in the third quarter, LR starts at its own 28. Nick for eight and three for a first down. Nick for four, Dom for two, and Nick for one, setting up a 4th-and-3 at the LeRoy 46. Josh around end for 12 and the first down as the third quarter ends.

Nick is stopped for no gain, and then Josh-to-Dom is incomplete, but Hornell is called for pass interference moving the ball to Red Raider 27 and a first down. Here comes penalty #5, a false start, making for a 1st-and-15. On 3rd-and-16, Josh is sacked for loss of nine. LR gets off another short punt and Hornell starts at their own 31.

LR's defense was ready the subsequent Hornell series forcing a 3-and-out.

The Knights do more of the same after gaining possession. 13 plays works 6:23 off the clock, but again, results in no go ahead points.

Now it was the defense's turn to make something happen.

On the second play in Hornell's possession, something big did happen as LR's Anthony Natrigo recovers a fumble at the Hornell 30 with just 58 seconds remaining in the contest.

Josh is dropped for a yard loss (LR timeout, 2nd at 0:45), incompletion, and then Josh is sacked on third down for minus six yards as Hornell calls their first timeout with 29 seconds remaining. LR goes for it and ball is almost caught at the one. Hornell takes over and completes two passes to the 50, but time runs out.

Onto overtime, LeRoy's first since against Cal-Mum in the 1997 season. LR wins the coin toss and chooses to play defense first. Trenton Smith for eight, Tyler Crouch for four and a first down. Trenton Smith for two and then six for the TD. PAT is good and Hornell leads 14-7.

Now it was the Knights' turn. Incompletion, Nick for two, another incompletion brings up fourth down. The pass from Josh to Nick is broken up in the end zone, ending the game with a 14-7 triumph by the hometown Raiders.
