Defense leads the way as
LeRoy rips Warsaw 44-0

Warsaw - The defense did the damage as the LeRoy Oatkan Knights crushed host Warsaw 44-0 in Livingston County football action Saturday (10-6). The Tigers had just 21 yards of total offense. RB Mike Rowley had 39 yards on the ground for Warsaw.

"We have a strong defense," LeRoy's Jake Syracuse said. "We all know what we are doing and where we are going on every play." The statistic that tells the story is the time of possession in the first half, which LeRoy won by about a 2 to 1 margin.

"Week by week you've got to get better," LeRoy coach Brian Moran said. "This week upfront they played very well. I thought our defense played extremely well and did some good things. If you can control the tempo offensively, you control the game and we did that today."

The Oatkan Knights took the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards on 10 plays. The drive, which took 4:40 off the clock, resulted in a 2-yard scoring run by Matt Miller. Joe Cosimeno had a 48-yard run during the drive. Brendan Fulmer kicked his first of four extra points. The Tigers went three-and-out on their first drive.

LeRoy then drove 66 yards on nine plays and Cosimeno capped off the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. He finished with 78 yards total on the ground. Warsaw fumbled on the third play of the ensuing possession. Brendan Moran fell on the ball for the first of his two fumble recoveries of the day. He also had 10 tackles. "They just fumbled a couple of snaps and I happened to be there," the linebacker said. Rick Laurie eventually scored on a 8-yard run.

LeRoy's next score came on a 51-yard touchdown pass from QB Joe Shaughnessy to end Fulmer. " I got stuck," Shaughnessy said. "Fulmer came across the middle, I hit him and he made an awesome catch and an awesome run. That was Fulmer, not me."

With LeRoy looking to score near the end of the first half, Shaughnessy was picked off by Dave Hoffman at the 10-yard line. LeRoy's Don Miller tacked FB Chris Reger for a 9-yard loss on the first play in Warsaw's drive. On the next play, QB Chris Wood was sacked by Laurie in the end zone for a safety. A couple of plays later, the Knights scored on a 23-yard run by Laurie. Shaughnessy hit Fulmer for the two-point conversion to make the score 38-0 at the half.

"You can't turn the ball over. You've got to make them go 80 yards a drive and we didn't," Warsaw coach Ed Stores said. "You give them a short field, they are going to score every time and that's what they did to us."

The second unit played the second half for LeRoy, but nothing changed defensively. Warsaw did not get into LeRoy territory until four minutes were left in the game. The LeRoy offense move the ball enough to allow Fulmer to kick field goals of 36 and 33 yards.

"The second group needs to get the first group better during the week and vice versa," coach Moran said. "We were after the second group all week; we didn't think they performed real well last week. We stayed after them, they got some time this week and I think they played real well in the second half. Defensively they shut them down and offensively they moved the ball well."

Bill Fox had eight tackles and two of LeRoy's eight sacks, while Ian McElvie and Jason Hodge had nine tackles each. Joe Caccamise was LeRoy's primary ball carrier in the second half and rushed for 74 yards on 10 carries. LeRoy improves to 5-0, while Warsaw falls to 1-4.
