SECTION 5 CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP 2001

FAR WEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2001

Balanced attack leads to 59-6
win over Letchworth

LeRoy defense holds Indians to 8 yards total of rushing

LeRoy - The Oatkan Knights again utilized a stifling defense and a host of running backs to take it to the visiting Indians of Letchworth Central 59-6. The Indians are coached by LeRoy alumnus Tim "Sticks" McMullen. Tim's star athlete son Corky, the regular QB of the team and a top caliber basketball player, is out of action for the gridiron season due to a serious injury and this loss has definitely affected the Indians.

The Knights scored the only TD of the first quarter after driving 68 yards, mostly on the ground. QB Joe Shaughnessy hit wideout Brendan Fulmer in the corner of the end zone at the 4:45 mark to put the Knights ahead. Fulmer tacked on the PAT kick and Knights maintained the 7-0 lead to quarter's end.

Letchworth did mount a fine drive of their own after Fulmer kicked the ball out of the end zone, giving the Indians a drive start at their own 20. Letchworth was able to move the ball effectively against the blitzing LeRoy defense and even showed some savvy with a fake punt that was successful on fourth down. Several penalties against the Knights did not help matters. The visitors scored on a very well executed screen pass and run at the 10:13 mark of the second quarter as Letchworth QB Brandon McCormick hit John Thompson for the tally. The attempt for two points was stuffed, but the Indians were down just 7-6.

The Knights received a good drive start on the ensuing kickoff as tough Scott Zavitz returned the pigskin to the Knights' 42. From there, the Knights methodically moved the ball down the field, even gaining some nice yardage on two Shaughnessy QB sneaks. An inspired Shaughnessy completed the drive with a 16-yard dash around the right end at the 5:58 mark. The Knights were successful in scoring two points on the PAT as holder Shaughnessy flipped the ball to a trailing Fulmer who ran into the end zone untouched after the fake kick.

The LeRoy defense made sure that another Letchworth score was not in the cards as they continually crashed through the Indians' line to thwart the offense. Leading tacklers on the evening were Rick Laurie and Kenny Smith, who each registered 10 tackles. Right behind them were the weightlifting duo of Brendan Moran and Donny Miller with 7 apiece. Moran and Miller are noted for hitting the weight room before and after these gridiron contests. If they could find a way to pump iron during the game, they would.

The Knights' offense took over at midfield with 2:39 remaining in the half and they were hungry for a score. The 2-minute drill is perhaps alive and well at LHS with all of the offensive weapons available to coach Moran. Smash-mouth running back Matt Miller bulled through a huge opening made possible by the LeRoy line with 29 seconds remaining in the half. The 8 yard run and PAT gave the Knights a 22-6 lead at intermission.

The second half was a lesson in inertia for the Indians - objects in motion tend to stay in motion. Those objects were the fierce LeRoy defensive linemen making life miserable for the Letchworth offense and the LeRoy running backs, of which six of them combined for 274 yards on 36 carries.

The LeRoy defense stuffed the Indians badly on their first possession of the second half. The Shaughnessy led offense moved the ball at will, culminating with a Shaughnessy to Fulmer TD pass at the 6:13 mark of the third quarter. The 14-yard slant put the score at 29-6 after the Fulmer PAT. Five minutes later, junior star running back Joe Cosimeno showed some good hands on the receiving end of Shaughnessy's third TD pass of the evening. The 26-yarder gave the Knights a commanding 36-6 lead after the usual Fulmer boot for point. Scoring was not complete for the Knights in the third quarter even though Letchworth had possession of the ball with less than a minute remaining. Junior Sam DeFazio intercepted a Letchworth pass with 23 seconds remaining in the stanza and returned it beautifully down the sidelines a total of 50 yards for a TD that really pumped up the crowd and the team. An awesome cutback at the end of his run had the crowd wondering who this player was. It was a sweet return to say the least. After three quarters it was LeRoy 43, Letchworth 6.

DeFazio showed his versatility by notching an offensive TD as well in the final quarter. Reid Whiting (2 for 2 in relief of Shaughnessy for 64 yards) put a beauty of a 49-yard pass into the outstretched arms of a streaking DeFazio who galloped in for the score to push the Knights' lead to 51-6 after junior Joe Caccamise added the 2-point PAT. Caccamise notched the last score of the evening for the locals on a 43-yard sweep around right end. Joe's impressive speed and ability to cut landed him honors as the leading rusher for the Knights as he collected 85 yards on just seven carries. Zavitz added the final points on a tough PAT run to make the final LeRoy 59, Letchworth 6.

With the win the Knights stand at 6-0. The are currently rated #1 among Section 5 small schools and #6 in the state of New York among Class C size schools. Next up, a visit to Geneseo, to hopefully put the final touches on an undefeated regular season before the Big Show (sectionals) begins.
