Knights destroy Mynderse Devils
in Sectional quarterfinal 62-0

Brendan Moran and fellow seniors finish Hartwood Park careers on a high note

LeRoy - The Oatkan Knights began the 2001 Section 5 Class C playoffs at home Friday evening (10-26) as the #1 seed taking on Finger Lakes-East member and #8 seed, the Mynderse Academy Devils. Coach Moran's squad showed no sign of a letdown playing the overmatched visitors in extremely cold and windy conditions. Sleet and gusts of 30-40 mph did little to stop the Knights attack. Mynderse however was as cold as ice.

The Knights gained first possession of the game and started from their own 28. A third-and-one at the 37 lead Coaches Cappotelli and Moran to call for a QB sneak to grab a first down. Joe Shaughnessy "snuck" it up the middle of the Devil defense for an incredible 27-yard gain. One play later, RB Ricky Laurie ran around the Mynderse defense for a 36-yard TD to give the Knights the lead just two minutes into the contest. Kicker Brendan Fulmer smashed the PAT kick through a driving wind to make it 7-0 Knights.

Mynderse was met by a LeRoy defense on their first possession that showed the visitors why just 21 points have been scored on the Oatkan Knights all season long. Three-and-out was the norm for the Devils on the evening. LeRoy's second possession started at their own 45. The Knights were fourth-and-one at the Mynderse 46 three plays later. Punt? Perish the thought! RB Joe Cosimeno (who averaged 10 yards per carry on the night) pulled off a 15-yard beauty to keep the drive alive. At the 5:31 mark, RB Matt Miller went right behind a crushing block by OL Jim Woodard. 19 yards later he was staring at the scoreboard and the home total being reset to 13. The Fulmer kick for PAT was down the middle. 14-0 Knights.

Mynderse did mange a first down on their next possession before stalling and punting to the Knights. LeRoy began their drive from their own 34. A nice screen to TE Brendan Moran and a 45-yard burst by junior RD Joe Caccamise put the ball at the Devils' 6. A combination of good Mynderse defense and bad penalties taken by the Knights prevented the locals from going in for a third straight score.

Mynderse managed to hold on to the ball for just a play as they fumbled the pigskin back to the Knights on their second down. DL Donny Miller was there to fall on the ball at the 3. A play later, QB Joe Shaughnessy scored his eighth rushing TD of the season. It was 21-0 at the 11:14 mark of the second quarter. Things would turn for the worse for Mynderse.

With the cold wind behind him now in this quarter, Fulmer booted the ball through the end zone to give the Devils a drive start from their own 20. Brendan would hit the next four kickoffs through the end zone as well. With Moran making life tough for the Mynderse offense, the Devils punted to the Knights on fourth down. Two plays later Shaughnessy hooked up with Fulmer for a beautiful 40-yard TD down the middle to push the Knights to a 28-0 lead. The TD pass was Shaughnessy's eighth of the season, to match his rushing TD total.

After the Fulmer boot out the end zone, Moran smothered the Mynderse QB causing a fumble that was picked up by a Miller, Matt this time. The Moran tackle was just one of 13 that Brendan was in on for the contest. The Knights took over at the Mynderse 11 and two plays later, LeRoy's season rushing leader Joe Cosimeno went over from the 2 following some excellent blocking by linemen Woodard and Ian McElvie, as well as fellow backs Laurie and Miller (Matt). With seven and a half minutes to play in the first half, the Knights were up

Mynderse running back Bobby Plate showed some power running on the next Devils' possession . After a 12-yard sack by LeRoy's Kenny Smith, Moran recovered yet another Mynderse fumble at the Devils' 30. Shaughnessy found Cosimeno in the flats for a 12-yard pickup to the 18. At the 5:33 mark, Moran scored on a sweet counter from the 18, only to have it negated by a holding penalty. The ball was moved back to the 24. Cosimeno jetted down to the 6 on the next play to set up a Moran deja vu counter run. This time the Moran rush counted and the lead stood at 42-0 at the half.

The second half was more of the same. A towering Fulmer boot of the end zone, a stalled Mynderse drive and a punt return opportunity for the Knights. Joe Cosimeno ran the Devils' punt back to the Mynderse 14 following a wall of blockers which included hitman Donny Miller. One of the Devils had the opportunity to feel what 250 lbs. of smackdown feels like as Miller delivered a crunch that left the hometown crowd gasping. You could hear the hit in downtown Rochester. Mercifully, this second half was being played with a running clock.

QB Reid Whiting became the 7th Knight to score on the evening as he followed his linemen over the goal line from a yard out for the TD score. The run for PAT failed and the score moved to 48-0 LeRoy. The defense continued to hold the Devils' to little or no yardage except for RB Bobby Plate. Plate was the lone bright spot for the Mynderse offense as he rushed for 126 yards on the night. LeRoy's 8th TD was a beautiful toss from QB Whiting to WR Sam DeFazio from 8 yards out. DeFazio caught the beautifully timed spiral from Whiting at the very back end of the end zone. The drive was fostered by the tough running of reserve RB Jeremy Cosimeno who showed his prowess with runs of 13 and 10 yards. Whiting added the PAT run to move the score to 56-zip. Rugged Scott "Rudy" Zavitz added the final tally of the evening on a fantastic 20-yard scamper to make the final LeRoy 62, Mynderse 0.

The Knights managed an incredible 433 yards of total offense as 9 different team members scored TDs. Leading the defense were Moran, Billy Fox, and Kenny Smith. Jake Syracuse, Donny Miller, Matt Miller, and Jason Hodge also wreaked havoc on the Devils, the 5th shutout victim of the Coach Paladino's well schooled defense.

LeRoy is now 8-0 on the year. They head into the Section 5 Class C semifinals this coming Sunday at St. John Fisher College to take on the 5th seeded Lions of Lyons, NY. Coach Moran's squad is currently ranked #5 in the New York State Class C Poll.
