Brockport - The 2003 edition of the Heidelberg Open was indeed a wet affair on the links at Brockport CC. Early week forecasts of 80 degrees and sunny skies were replaced by temperatures 20 degrees less under rainy, gray conditions. Nonetheless, 135 golfers representing 34 teams braved the elements and enjoyed themselves in the 3rd annual scramble
golf event.

The best scratch team in this year's event was captained by Craig Foreman. Craig along with stellar teammates Bob Bohme, Chris Hughto, and Heesung Kang ran away with the Low Gross honors with a superb 10-under tally of 61. The squad was red-hot on both nines going 6-under on holes 2-8 and scoring 3 straight birdies on holes 12, 13, and 14.

The Low Net championship was a very close affair as 3 teams tied with net 59's based on the Callaway scoring system. Team Conley comprised of Jay and Cindy Conley paired with Darlene Wohlers-Piper and Doc Piper managed to birdie the course's most difficult hole (the 396 yard par 4 number 14) which won them the tiebreaker and the championship trophy. The team scored a bogey-less round which included 7 birdies for a fine gross of 64 that netted down to their winning 59.

2nd place - Low Net
Gary Nichols, Roy Schmidt, Don Hensel, Bill Shaw
3rd place - Low Net
Donna Preston, Michael Schirmer, (not shown - Jim Garde, Mike Garde)

Defending Low Net champions - Team Shaw (Bill Shaw, Roy Schmidt, Don Hensel, and Gary Nichols) - birdied their first hole of the day and it looked as if a repeat was in order. The team was steady in the wet conditions shooting a pair of 32's for a 64 gross. The tiebreaker was the difference in their quest for a 2-peat. Third Low Net went to the perennial powerhouse Jim Garde squad (teammates Mike Garde, Donna Preston, and Michael Schirmer). Donna Preston fueled the squad off the tee with 8 drives used. Their only hiccup was a bogey on the difficult 18th hole.

Brockport CC did a great job hosting the tourney as the service and hospitality were top notch. The course was in very good condition considering the tough weather we have experienced to date. The awards ceremony was followed by the usual good time handing out the 50 door prizes to the masses. Thanks are in order to Human Resources (Cathy Fox, Mike Murray, and the Community Relations Committee) for once again donating to the cause which makes this annual event possible.

Thanks for all of your participation in this year's event....Ed Henry
