Knights defeat Livonia to finish season at 6-2 - Barney Mase

After a disappointing loss last week to Cal-Mum, the Knights were looking to end the season on a winning note. Andrew Alexander`s 130 yards and 2 TDs paced the offense while Joe Schwab contributed an interception and fumble recovery along with 9 tackles to lead the defense for a 12-0 victory.

Facing a 4th-and-5 from their own 41, the Bulldogs fake the punt, but the pass is incomplete giving LR excellent field position on its first position.

Against a tough defense, LR methodically moves the ball down the field. With no run over 8 yds the Knights use 10 plays on the scoring drive as Andrew Alexander scores from the 6. The extra point is no good and LR leads 6-0.

John Scheuing recovers a fumble at midfield for another good drive start, but the Knights only pick up one first down before punting the ball away to the Bulldog 11.

Livonia mounts a drive covering 13 plays getting to the Knights' 48. On 4th-and-4 the Bulldogs punt the ball pinning LR at their one with 3:55 left in the first half.

The Knights respond with their finest drive of the season. Alexander gains 13, 5, and 4 yds on successive runs followed by Chris Andrews' run for 6 earning the FD. Two plays later a screen pass to Alexander gains 54 yds to the 17 with 59 seconds left. Quentin Humphrey fires a strike for 13 to Brian Calmes, then Alexander runs in from the 4 putting LR up 12-0. Using just 8 plays, LR travels 99 yds in just 3:10.

Early in the 3rd quarter, Livonia is driving the ball into LR territory when Joe Schwab picks up the loose ball returning it 12 yds to the 46. A couple of first downs moves the chains before Greg Smith punts the ball away.

Four plays later Alexander intercepts the pass giving LR the ball at the Livonia 27. Alexander on three straight runs moves the ball to the 13. A penalty hurts the drive as LR turns the ball over on downs.

Livonia takes over and facing a 4th-and-6 on their own 30 elects to go for it. A QB scamper for 49 yds moves the ball to the LR 21. The LR defense stops the drive on Quentin Humphrey`s pass breakup on 3rd down and Schwab`s interception at the 5 on 4th down.

The Knights run out the last five minutes of the gamefor the shutout win.

Notes: Coach Dietsch runs his three year record to 21-4. Coach Moran has called up 6 players to the varsity for the sectional run. They are Brian Calmes, Josh Casper, John Kelso, John Scheuing, Joe Schwab, and Tyrone Wyckoff. Good luck to the Knights in the sectionals.

Cal-Mum Breaks Halftime Tie for 26-6 Victory - Barney Mase

Fresh off defeating an undefeated Hornell team last week, LeRoy looked to duplicate the same scenario this week. Knock off the undefeated Red Raiders from Cal-Mum. Marv Levy likes to preach win the turnover battle and good special teams will give a football team a good chance to win. Cal-Mum`s special teams came through with big plays and the Knights lost 4 fumbles with two inside the Raiders' 10 keeping Cal-Mum`s record perfect.

LR`s first series is a 3-and-out, but Greg Smith gets off a 50-yd punt making CM start at its own 17. On a 3rd-and-6 Brian Calmes sacks the QB for a loss of 9. A short punt gives LR excellent field position at the CM 29.

A penalty and a QB sack has the offense going in reverse and Greg Smith comes in to punt again, pinning CM at their 8. Fine open field tackles by Josh Casper and Joe Schwab and John Kelso`s pass breakup on 3rd down force another CM 3-and-out and LR again gets beautiful field position at the CM 37.

Andrew Alexander enters the lineup after missing last week with an injury. Runs of 4, 4, 7, and 3 move the ball down to the 19. Chris Andrews picks up 3, then two plays later Alexander goes around the left side scoring from the 10. The kick is no good and LR leads 6-0.

Ryan Bishop`s tackle saves a TD on the kickoff, but the Red Raiders finally have decent field position at the LR 48. After picking up a first down, CM is hit with a penalty, facing a 2nd-and-19. Showing good poise in the pocket, the QB hits the wideout for a 31-yd gain to the LR 13. Two plays later the CM runner takes it in from the 13. The run for the PAT fails and in a matter of 7 plays and using just 2:21 off the clock, CM ties the score at 6.

Besides punting, Smith shows a nice knack for running the ball, picking up a short kickoff and returning the ball to the LR 43. Facing a 3rd-and-9 LR QB Brandon Monteleone hits Andrews in the flats for 8 yards. Andrews picks up 2 tough yds to move the chains. Alexander rips off gains of 13, 9, and 19 moving the ball to 5. Next play LR fumbles the exchange and CM pounces on the ball at the 10.

CM moves the ball to their 46 before punting the ball. LR gains a FD as the half ends with the score knotted at 6.

CM receives the second half kickoff. Needing just one play the Raider RB evades at least 4 tackles enroute to a 79 yd TD run. The pass fails for the PAT. Cal-Mum takes the lead for the first time in the game 12-6.

Fumbling the kickoff, LR is able to recover the loose ball. Going 3-and-out Smith is on to punt for the third time. CM`s special teams comes up big again returning the punt 35 yds to the LR 28.

Now the pressure is on the Knights' defense to respond. Alexander drops the runner for a loss of 3. Picking up 7 on the next 2 downs, the Red Raiders face a 4th-and-6. Getting good pressure, the Knights force an incompletion to avert disaster....temporarily.

LR fumbles the ball away for the second time in the game on the very first play. Not wasting the opportunity, CM cashes in on the third play, running the ball in for a score from the 11. The pass for the PAT is good and CM leads 20-6 with 6:01 left in the third quarter.

Starting from their 30, the Knights' second play sees Alexander breaks off a gain of 48 yds to give LR a FD at the CM 25. Advancing the ball to the 6, LR suffers its third lost fumble of the game.

Cal-Mum is able to pick up a couple of first downs, moving the ball to the LR 47 before punting. A nice punt pins the Knights at their 15. On the second play from scrimmage LR fumbles the ball away for the fourth time giving the Raiders a short field at the LR 17. This is the third straight possession LR turns the ball over on a fumble.

CM converts a 4th-and-1 at the 8 for a gain of 7 down to the 1. Next play CM scores pushing the margin to the final of 26-6 with 5:52 left in the 4th quarter.

The next game is Wednesday, October 17 at 5:30 pm against the Livonia Bulldogs at home.

Wyckoff leads Knights to 14-7 win over unbeaten Hornell - Barney Mase

Traveling to Hornell on a beautiful fall day, the Jr. Knights would be without the services of their top running back Andrew Alexander and Kicker/Punter/Tight End Cody Niccloy. Reminiscent of last year's Varsity win in Hornell without Mike Farabella, the LeRoy JVs stepped up to the task as a team, giving the coaching staff and faithful fans a rousing victory. Like an actor giving an acceptance speech after winning an Oscar, I will forget to mention many names, but just remember that everybody contributed to this victory.

Getting the ball first, LR moves down the field in 10 plays only to be stopped on a 4th-and-1 at the Hornell 35. A little over 7 minutes were consumed on the drive. Tyrone Wyckoff carries the ball 8 times during the series.

Hornell starts off running 6 times in a row before going to the air. Facing a 3rd-and-14, the Red Raiders pick up 23 yards to the LeRoy 18. The very next play results in an 18-yd scoring pass play and with the extra point good, LR trails by a 7-0 count with just 57 ticks left in the 1st quarter. Not since the Batavia game has LR trailed.

Picking up the pace in the second drive, LR strikes with big plays. On 2nd-and-7 from the 35, Quentin Humphrey's play-action freezes the Hornell defense and he throws a strike to Brian Calmes picking up
33 yards. Next play Tyrone sprints off the left side for a 32-yd TD run. With kicker Niccloy hurt, LR must go for 2. Evading the pass rushers, Humphrey finds Calmes in the corner of the end zone for the 2 pt. PAT conversion for an 8-7 lead. The drive took only 2:26 in 5 plays.

Rest of the 1st half saw both teams trade punts, but Hornell did score on a wild play seconds before intermission as the running back caught a little 5-yd pass, circled around to the other side of the field, and evaded 3 tacklers to dive into the end zone for the score. The play was negated as there was a flag back at the 35-yd line. One more play had to be played in the half. The half can end on an offensive penalty, but only if LR declines the penalty which would have allowed the TD to stand. LR stops the next pass play for only a gain of 5 as the half indeed ends.

Getting the ball first in the 2nd half, Hornell starts a drive at their 20. Moving the ball down to the LR
24, the Knights' defense stiffens stopping a 4th-and-6 to take over on downs.

Unable to pick up a 1st down, Greg Smith comes in and nails a nice 30 yd punt with no return. Big plays start to show for the Knights. On 3rd-and-1, the defense strings out the runner and Calmes
drops the back for a 10-yd loss. LR gets the ball back at their own 25 and puts together a nice drive. Key play is a Humphrey to Chris Andrews pass completion in the flats, which gains 29 yard. The drive stalls at the 23 on a 4th-and-3, but the Knights are winning the field position battle.

Defense tightens it's grip the next series as the Hornell offense goes into reverse. John Scheuing drops the runner for a loss of 4, Calmes tips the ball at the line of scrimmage for an incompletion and Scheuing and Alex Cardenas stop the runner in the backfield for another loss of 4.

Getting the ball on the Raiders' 49 following the punt and now into the 4th quarter, LR strikes quickly. After a 1-yd gain by Wyckoff, Humphrey finds Andrews in the flats again, this time picking up 36 yards down to the 12.

Just like in the first touchdown drive after a big pass play, Tyrone bulls his way in for the TD on the next play. The PAT run fails and with 9:08 left in the game LR leads 14-7.

A short kickoff gives the Red Raiders excellent starting position on their 40. After Jon Casper tackles the runner for a 5-yd loss, Hornell converts a 3rd-and-14 for a 1st down. Reaching the LR 43, Josh Casper stops the Hornell QB option on 4th-and-4, turning the ball over to the Knights with 5:18 left on the clock.

Tyrone picks up 7 on a 3rd-and-4 to keep the sticks moving. Two more runs for 7 and 3 pick up another first down. Now facing a 2nd-and-9 and with the defense crowding the line, Humphrey executes another play action fake, hooking up with Calmes for a gain of 18. The series ends with Quentin getting sacked, but Hornell has had to burn all of its timeouts and start from its 25.

Quentin ends the Raiders' hope by intercepting a pass 2 plays later to secure the LR victory.

Notes: Hornell came into the game unbeaten at 5-0. Hornell gained only 11 yards on its last 4 possessions. Tyrone carried the football 31 times while Quentin was 6 out of 10 for 132 yards.

Next up is arch-rival Cal-Mum on their new turf field Oct 12th at 5:30 pm. Cal-Mum enters the game undefeated.

Alexander shines in Jr. Knights win over Letchworth - Barney Mase

The Knights rolled into Gainesville looking for their 4th straight victory. Andrew Alexander gained 103 yards by halftime before leaving the game with an injury. Coach Dietsch is developing depth as Tyrone Wyckoff, Chris Andrews, and Joe Schwab stepped up big in the second half for the offense while the offensive line keeps improving each week. Defensively, the Knights allowed a late TD but were strong again, allowing just 13 yards of offense after 3 quarters of play. The final score saw LeRoy prevail by a 31-6 tally.

On the third play of the game, Joe Schwab intercepts the ball at the Letchworth 32. With a steady dose of Alexander, LeRoy moves the ball in 9 plays as Andrew goes in from the 2. Kick is no good and LR leads 6-0.

Forcing a 3-and-out by the Indians, LR takes over at their 46. Alexander promptly rips off an 18-yd gain. Later in the drive facing a 3rd-and-8 from the 10, Alexander gets great blocking from the offensive line to register a 1st down at the 1. Next play Andrew dives in for the TD. Run for the PAT fails and LR leads 12-0 less than 5 minutes into game.

Rest of the 1st half saw each team have 2 possessions each, but not much offense came about by either squad in the steady rain.

The 2nd half starts with Alexander on the bench with an injury. Tyrone Wyckoff steps into the lineup. Tyrone picks up 27 yards on his first carry. Three plays later, Joe Schwab turns a 5-yd reception into a 37-yd scoring pass play. Niccloy kicks the PAT for a 19-0 LR lead.

John Scheuing tackles the punter after a bad snap giving LR excellent field position at the 37. On the second play, Tyrone speeds into the end zone from 30 yards for the score. LR is up 25-0.

The next Letchworth possession starts on their own 28. On 2nd down, Josh Casper sacks the QB for a 15-yd loss. Then on 3rd down, for the third straight game, Ryan Bishop intercepts a pass giving LR the ball at the Letchworth 30.

Chris Andrews lugs the ball 3 straight times leading to a 2-yd run for the TD. Key play was a 22-yd pickup to the 2. LR leads 31-0 with less than 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter, Letchworth put together a nice 12 play drive covering 83 yards for the final score of the game.

Next up for the 4-1 Jr. Knights is a road game at unbeaten Hornell at 5:30 on October 5th.

Jr. Knights wins 3rd in a row, downing the Avon Braves - Barney Mase

On a beautiful fall evening, LeRoy again rode the legs of Andrew Alexander to a 21-3 victory over the Avon Braves. Drew carried the ball 25 times for 209 yards, scoring three TDs. Not resting on defense, Drew made 11 tackles and intercepted a pass for good measure. There were other stars of the game as well. For the second game in a row, Ryan Bishop intercepted a pass and Quentin Humphrey, making his first start in the secondary, recorded 11 tackles. John Kelso led a goal line stand, stopping the Braves inches from a score on 4th down. This was all accomplished with two key defensive members out with injuries,Chris Andrews and Jon Casper. The offensive line of Calmes, Casper, Kelso, Kovach, and Cardenas keep improving with each game under the guidance of line coach 'Porp' Rogers.

Receiving the kickoff, LR drives 79 yards in 11 plays scoring on Alexander`s 3 yd run. He carries 10 times in the drive with a key 23 yd pickup. Niccloy kicks the PAT.

Not to be outdone, Avon starts a long drive of their own at their 17. Mixing up the play calling, the Braves march down the field, converting a 3rd-and-9, 3rd-and-1 , and 4th-and-1, setting up a 1st-and-goal at the LR 10. Now into the 2nd quarter, three plays later the Braves are just inches from the goal line. John Kelso and John Scheuing rise up and stop the QB sneak. After chewing 8:05 off the clock, Avon comes up empty.

Unable to pick up a first down, LR punts from the end zone. Avon gets great field position at the LR 23. After a Brave first down to the 11, Alexander makes a terrific play, dropping the Avon receiver in the flats for a loss of nine. Bishop breaks up the pass at the goal line on 3rd down, forcing the Braves to settle for a 33 yd FG.

Unlike the previous scoring drive, LR does not need 11 plays to score. On the first play, Alexander cuts through the left side of the line, down the sideline, and then cuts back, scoring on a 59 yd jaunt. After an offsides on the defense moves the ball to the 1 1/2 yd line, LR opts to go for a two point PAT. Drew plows in for the PAT, putting the Knights up 15-3 at the half.

Just like the first half, the Braves come out moving the ball. Converting on a 3rd-and-9 with a 28 yd pass reception, the Braves are knocking on the door. Josh Casper (one of 3 Casper brothers playing football this year) on 3rd-and-1 from the 9, sacks the Avon QB for a loss of 9 yards. Bishop again breaks up the pass on 4th down, ending the drive.

Picking up a couple of first downs, LR`s drive stalls at the 49. Niccloy punts the ball to the 20 forcing the Braves to go 80 yards for a score. Three plays later, Bishop intercepts the ball at the 44. Not wasting the turnover, Alexander runs the ball in from the 27 for his 3rd TD of the game and a 21-3 LR margin.

Alexander halts the last Avon drive with an interception and 18 yd return. The victory sends the Jr. Knights to a 3-1 record for the year.

Other Notes: Tyrone Wyckoff switched to fullback for the game, filling in for the injured Chris Andrews while Cody Niccloy filled in at the linebacker position. After having beaten Pembroke and Avon, LeRoy has completed two legs of the Route 5 triple crown needing only to beat rival Cal-Mum for the trifecta.

Next up is a road contest at Letchworth on Sept 28 starting at 5:30.

Jr. Knights pull away in 4th quarter to stop Pembroke Dragons - Barney Mase

In the season opener against Batavia Andrew Alexander suffered from leg cramps so badly that he carried the ball only three times in the second half. A well hydrated Andrew proved to be a different story, lugging the football 31 times for 150 yards and scoring 3 touchdowns with his longest run being only 15 yards

The Knights punched across 2 TDs in the final quarter enroute to a 28-13 victory over Pembroke in a contest that was much closer than the score indicates. LR`s defense came up with several big plays to thwart Pembroke`s drives, highlighted by Ryan Bishop`s two interceptions.

On their second possession, LR drove 48 yards for the TD, capped off by Alexander's plunge from the one. Niccloy's PAT made it 7-0. Pembroke didn't waste any time responding, needing only 1:31 to score. Traveling 55 yards in just 4 plays, the Dragons got on the board with a run from the 15. The PAT is good tying the contest at 7.

On the very next possession, LR fumbles the ball away giving the Dragons excellent field position at the Knights' 37. Ryan Bishop stepped up for the defense, intercepting the ball at the 9 and returning it 44 yards to snuff out the scoring opportunity. Neither team could muster a first down the rest of the half.

Joe Schwab came up with a fumble recovery on the second play of the 2nd half at the Dragons' 22 giving LR momentum. On the second play of the drive, Alexander runs in from the 14 for the score. Niccloy's kick is good for a LR 14-7 lead.

Later in the 3rd, LR fumbles the ball away at their own 36. Pembroke drops back to pass on the next play but Brian Calmes charges in, dropping the QB for a 10 yd loss. Two incompletions forces a punt.

Starting the 4th quarter at their 33, LR relies on Alexander for this drive. Getting good push from the offensive line, Drew carries the ball 9 out of 10 plays on the drive, running in the last 8 yards for the TD. Niccloy's kick makes it LR`s favor 21-7 with just 7:17 remaining.

Ryan Bishop comes up with his second interception, leaping high for the ball ending the next Dragon drive. Chris Andrews and Brandon Spurling split carries on the next drive as Spurling carries in from the 4 for the final TD. Niccloy goes a perfect 4 for 4 on PATs for a 28-7 lead.

Pembroke gets a 23 yd scoring pass with just 23 ticks remaining to close out the scoring. On defense, Josh Casper had 9 tackles while brother Jon, Brian Calmes, and John Kelso each recorded a sack.
Quentin Humphrey was steady at QB, completing 3 of 6 for 46 yards. Joe Schwab hauled in two passes for 44 yards.

Next up is Avon Thursday at 5:30 .

Jr. Knights rebound with sound performance vs York Knights - Barney Mase

Smarting after last week's defeat to Batavia, the Knights responded with a strong performance on both sides of the ball, cruising to a 49-0 victory over York.

Andrew Alexander quickly put LR on the board, going the distance with the opening kickoff 76 yards for the TD. The Knights defense forced a three and out, but LR`s next drive ended with a fumble on the York 6. On 3rd down, Joe Schwab intercepted the ball at the 13 giving LR excellent field position. Needing only one play, Alexander sprints into the end zone for his second TD. Drew runs in the PAT for a 14-0 lead.

A botched snap on the punt leaves LR again in good field position at the 20. Carrying the ball for the first time, Tyrone Wyckoff runs off left tackle and into the end zone for his first career touchdown. Cody Niccloy kicks the PAT for a 21-0 first quarter lead.

LR`s defense shined in the second quarter as Chris Andrews and Alexander both intercepted passes while Brian Calmes and John Kelso recorded sacks. Alexander`s INT and 36y d return to the 30 set up LR`s only score of the quarter. Carrying the ball for just the third time, Wyckoff burst through the line for a TD run of 25 yards. Niccloy`s kick widens the LR lead to 28-0.

Sitting out last week with an injury, Quentin Humphrey made his first start and showed a nice touch hooking up with Schwab for a gain of 20 on the Knights final drive of the half. Niccloy`s field goal try of 30 yards was wide right as the half ended.

Schwab`s fumble recovery on the second half kickoff again gave the Knights good field position at the 39. Six plays later Alexander runs in from the 15 for the TD. Niccloy`s kick pushes the score to 35-0.

In the 4th newcomer Brandon Spurling put on a dazzling display, scoring on runs of 32 and 58 yards to round out the scoring. Niccloy kicks both PATs making the final score 49-0.

Next up for the Knights on the schedule are the Pembroke Dragons. Game time is 5:30 on Sep 14th.

Weather & Batavia Blue Devils dampen Jr. Knights' '06 opener - Barney Mase

Rain from Hurricane Ernesto made for less than ideal conditions. That did not seem to bother Batavia`s Anthony D`Aurizio, running for 137 yards on 25 carries and 1 TD. LR`s Andrew Alexander and Chris Andrews both ran well, combining for 173 yards, but the Blue Devil defense proved too tough in the second half limiting the Knights to a total of 9 yards.

After stopping Batavia at the 15 on their second drive, LR needs just 4 plays to reach the end zone. Alexander gains 34 yards before Andrews runs with the pigskin 38 yards for the TD. Cody Niccloy kicks the PAT.

Later in the half, a fumble on a punt return gives the Blue Devils excellent field position at the LR 24. On 3rd and 8, Joe Canzoneri hit Loe Pedro for a 10 yd scoring strike. D'Aurizio kicks the PAT to knot the score at 7.

LR mounts one last drive right before halftime. Starting from their own 20, the Knights travel down to the 12 as Alexander gains 41 yards in the drive. Niccloy`s FG from the 19 is blocked by Troy Ireland, sending both teams into the locker room soaked and tied.

Poor field position plagued the Knights in the second half. Midway though the 3rd quarter, Batavia`s Duffy Starks ran back a punt 24 yards down to the Knights 19. Seven plays later D`Aurizio sweeps around left end for a 6 yd TD run. He kicks the PAT for a 14-7 Batavia lead.

The defense kept the Knights in the game as the offense could not generate any first downs. In the 4th, Niccloy punted from his own 5 and gave the Knights some breathing room with a 40 yd punt.
LR`s defense held on downs, but unfortunately ran into the punter giving Batavia a FD at the 38.

Batavia drove in for it`s third TD with a little over a minute remaining on Vinny Pedro`s 20 yd scamper. Chip Chapman kicks the PAT making the final score Batavia 21, LeRoy 7.

LR defeated Batavia last year in Week One to start their undefeated season so the Blue Devils snap the winning streak at 8. Next up is a home game against York on Sept 7th. Let's hope the lights stay on.
