Quote of the Week

"I am not as bad as
people think..."

It is said that "perception is reality". One member of the SLGL banking on that notion is Steve French. "I think people think of me as a decent golfer, but dang, the numbers don't prove me out...what gives?", French queried. At the end of Week 18 action, Steve sat at the bar and lamented that the USGA could be hearing from him soon in a possible defamation of character suit. You see, the USGA puts together the formula that determined one's handicap. In the SLGL, the world renown Tufano Script employs the USGA formula to figure out the league's weekly handicaps. Steve finished the 2003 season as a 10. This year brought an 11. "I have many roles to fill daily and they are taking a toll on my game. Instead of course ratings, slopes, stroke equity and the like, why doesn't the USGA figure in human factors such as number of meetings in a day, how many PowerPoints spoken to, number of trips taken in a month, and how fast one walks in a large building located on Manitou Rd? "Throw in the Dad gig and no wonder my numbers are up", French said. What can we say? Numbers don't lie. By the way, Steve grabbed the final closest to pin honors on #9. He managed to 3-putt the stellar tee shot to a bogey...stupid USGA formula!

Amazing Feats of Golf

Even though the USGA can only work with the numbers you post, the Lord can step in any time with a helping hand...or a skip. Gerry Giuliano was experiencing some woes on hole #7, lying 2 with the pond lurking to his left. His next strike at the ball seemed destined for Davey Jones Locker when out of nowhere, the ball skipped over the pond to terra firma short of the hole. "It was unbelievable", opponent Mike Devoy stated, "it was wet all the way and then suddenly it seemed as if his ball bounced off a turtle shell to safety!" Gerry took advantage of his good fortune, pitched to the green and 2-putted to match all with a 6 to win the hole. Gerry and partner VJ O'Brien would end their inaugural season in a show of solidarity as each fired a 63 to guarantee that next season can only go uphill for the duo.
